Honest Phuket Farmer Finds Cash And Gives it to Police

PHUKET: A man who found a substantial sum of cash on the pavement of Phuket and took it to police has been commended for his honesty.

Lungwan Suppalert, 61, says he wouldn't have been able to sleep at nights for feeling guilty that it was someone else's money and they might need it.

So, after picking up around 10,000 baht near a restaurant close to the Koh Sireh traffic circle on Sunday, the local farmer - originally from north east Thailand - went to a nearby police box and explained what had happened.

The police and Phuket's Damrungtam ombudsman's office are now making an appeal for anyone who has lost the cash to come forward.

Khun Lungwan has been presented with a certificate commending his exceptional honesty.

''In my mind, I had to go to police because someone might need the money more than me,'' he said.

The precise amount is not being declared so claimants can describe the total and their movements before losing the money.

Claimants can go to the Damrungtam office at Phuket Provincial Hall.

An off duty police officer will claim the money, after getting some inside info.

I'm tempted to get one of those certificates for my CV.

Anyone know at what point it becomes "exceptional" honesty?

    Turning in amounts greater than 10B, 100B, 500B, 1000B, 5000B, 10000B?

There are some honest people about for sure . My wife dropped her phone at a local open market a few years back and she didn't realises she had dropped it until we got home.
I cynically told her she would never see that phone again but we phoned her number anyway,to my surprise a Policeman answered the phone and said that someone had handed it in at our local Police-station. The phone cost about 6k and when we went to collect it we found the the person that handed it in didn't leave a contact name or number so we could thank them.

I have experienced some of this honesty from Thai people. I left a wallet on the table of an outdoors noodle place in Sukhumvit and the waitress ran 100 meters to catch up with me. I left a pretty valuable saxophone in a cab and the cab drove off, screamed around the nearest u-turn and came back to where he dropped me off to give it to me. Both refused a reward.

Yep. More so regarding the general character of Thais than what is imagined through stereotype.

Though, curiosity would mark me as to inquire what becomes of this cash if not claimed?

I've slumped down drunk before and my phone and wallet fell from my shorts pocket. When I came round 30mins later still in a haze, two motorbike taxi guys were there and handed me both, asking me if I was ok, and helped me up.

They didn't have to, they could have taken the 3000 Baht I had, or my bank card, the phone, they could have kept it all. Haters on certain forums/comments would have loved them to do that.

But they didn't. And it was along a rather bleak section of Rama 4 at about 11pm

Pat, I still remember you regaling us with that story on Ajarn... ages ago.. (I have a good memory).

Yes, agree 100%... fair is fair... we are all too quick to jump on the Thais for any grievance be it real, or imagined... but far too slow to praise them when they show us their tender/honorable side..

I wish all Thais (no... all people) were as decent as the ones DJ happened to meet that night... one thing I have stolen from the Thais is this "tum dee, dai dee... tum sure, dai sure" sorry for my shitty phonetic/karaoke Thaienglish...

Do good, receive good... do bad, receive bad... I truly believe that.

Sure, I know it's naive... really evil people grinning with happiness from ear to ear... but still... nice to be nice to peeps no?

It was cool to be an asshole in the 90's... but it's cool to be nice guy now (vomit) 555
