VIDEO : Karon beach seafloor littered with trash

The deputy mayor of Tambon Karon of Muang district of Phuket says a huge amount of trash on the seafloor at Karon beach was either thrown overboard from fishing boats, passenger boats and not from business operators on the beach.

Comment from the deputy mayor Mr Ithiporn Sangkaeo came as a 1.09 minute video clip posted on Facebook by a diver, Visit Chounchit, showing huge amount of trash, which included bottles, cans, plastic bags, pipes, woods, robes, at the bottom of the sea in front of Karon beach in Phuket, was widely shared on the social network.

At the end of the clip, he displayed a sign which reads “The seabed is now full with trash at Karon beach.”

The clip drew widespread share with many blaming business operators on the Karon beach for dumping these thrashes into the bottom of the sea.

But Mr Ithiporn disagreed saying these garbage might have been either dumped by fishing and passenger boats or swept from other places to Karon beach, citing strong waves blown into the shore by northern winds.

They might not be originated from Karon beach itself, he said.

However he said he would mobilise team of divers from the private sector and the Tambon local adminitration to join in the collection of garbages at the bottom of the sea on December 3, as part of several activities to be held to celebrate His Majesty the King birthday anniversary on December 5.

Amazing how powerful social media is in Thailand, shaming people into action whereas nothing would have been done.

Last time i was swimming in that neck off the woods i pulled a massive plastic Singha banner out of the sea, a local bar owner gave us a few beers for it.
Later in the day we pulled out a beach vendor parasol! No beers where forthcoming by an irate local who claimed it as his property and promptly snatched it and walked quickly up the beach with it, probably to sell it.
We was starting to acquire quite an audience off would be salvage hunters towards the end off the day.
Let's hope the several activities planned for the kings birthday are environmental.

Try walking or swimming through the water at Kata. You get covered in that many plastic bags it is almost like wearing a wetsuit.

It is pretty hard to get wet.

It's funny how these pristine beaches get foked up.

The Monsoon season in Bali brings an off shore wind that coats Kuta beach from one end to other with the most unimaginable amount of rubbish.

The worlds shit arrives on cue every year.

After the Monsoon the beach is sanitised and returned to heaven again.

VIDEO :Campaign launched to get rid of undersea garbage at Karon beach in Phuket

Government and private sectors in Phuket province have joined forces to dispose large amount of garbage scattered on the sea floor of the Karon beach.
The garbage was located about 200 metres from the Karon beach, stretching about 400 metres long and close to the coral reefs. Officials have expressed concern that the change of currents or wind direction can cause the garbage to drift toward the coral reefs and cause damaged to them.

About 100 officials and volunteers were mobilized to join the garbage collection effort.

About 200 kgs of garbage were plucked from the seafloor on Monday morning, said Mr Watcharin Thinklang, director of marine and coastal resources management office. Another 200 kgs are expected to be collected in the afternoon, he added.

The garbage was believed to come from the coast – thrown into the sea by careless people and dumped overboard of vessels such as fishing boats.
