Chinese couple held under suspicion of stealing 10-million baht diamond

Two Chinese nationals who were suspected to have stolen a 10-million baht worth of diamond from the jewelry fair at Muang ThongThani on Thursday have been stopped and detained at Suvarnabhumi international airport by immigration police.

The two, identified as Hae Ying, 30, and Mrs Jiang Xulian, 30, denied the accusation claiming that they were just tourists and were about to travel back home in China.

Thorough searches of their bodies and baggages did not locate the stolen 6-kiarat diamond. But an employee of a jewelry booth at the fair who filed complaint to Pakkred police in Nonthaburi told immigration police that the two Chinese were at her both and asked to see the lost diamond.

Video footage from the CCTV at Challenger building where the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is currently being held showed the two Chinese at the booth.

Ms Manthana Weyakaew who manned the booth told police that the couple came to her booth and asked to see the diamond and then asked about the price. After a while, they returned her the diamond and left, said Ms Manthana, adding that she found out the returned diamond was a fake.

Another Video footage found the couple left the building and hailed a taxi.

Chinese tourists confess to swallowing stolen diamond

The two Chinese tourists arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport while trying to board a flight back home yesterday have confessed to steal a 6-carat diamond from an exhibition booth at the Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair in Muangthongthani Exhibition Centre.

The two tourists, Hae Ying, 34, and Mrs Jiang Xulian, 39, earlier denied the accusation claiming that they were just tourists and were about to travel back home in China.

But after they were taken for X-rays, the diamond was shown in the digestive system of a suspect.

The couple later confessed, and were escorted back to Pak Kred police station for examination to take it out yesterday.

Both were taken to the Nonthaburi provincial court today for permit to extend their detention period by 12 more days for questioning.

Earlier yesterday they admitted to have flown in to the country for theft at the diamond fair.

They have prepared duplicate diamond to replace the real diamond while asking to see it from the booth employee.

The diamond is priced at 10 million baht.

Tourism police chief Police Maj Gen Suphapol Arunsit said the theft was suspected to be conducted by the well planned gang comprising more than two persons.

The gang was believed to commit the crime in many countries before, he added.

Earlier an employee of a jewellery booth Ms Manthana Weyakaew filed complaint to Pak Kred police in Nonthaburi that a 6-carat diamond was stolen and she suspected that a Chinese couple who asked to see the diamond might steal it.

According to her, the couple came to her booth and asked to see the diamond and then asked about the price. After a while, they returned her the diamond and left, said Ms Manthana, adding that she found out the returned diamond was a fake.

Immigration offices at the airports were later alerted as video footage shown the couple at the booth, and another footage found the couple left the building and hailed a taxi.

The good news for the Chinese visitor to Bangkok was that a doctor had successfully removed a foreign object from her large intestine that could have damaged her digestive system.

The bad news: It was a 10 million baht ($278,000) diamond the woman was accused of stealing from a jewelry fair.

Police Col. Mana Tienmaungpak said a doctor wielding a colonoscope and the medical equivalent of pliers pulled the 6-carat gemstone from the large intestine of the woman alleged to have filched it, after nature and laxatives failed to get it out.

Once upon a time I lost a key ring type Swiss Army knife.

Found it in the back yard in a pile of Black Lab feces. Still mostly OK.

Chinese males must be as useless as Thai males, one might think this so called gentleman would have offered to swallow it instead of expecting her to do it.

Why they didn't give the diamond to accomplice instead of trying to smuggle it themselves?

Probably would have got away with it if she'd just Fed-ex'd it to herself in China?
