Briton & Russian Busted for Extorting French Businessman in Chonburi

The two suspects at police press conference in Chonburi province, 21 May 2015

CHONBURI - Police say they have arrested two foreign men who allegedly detained a French businessman in Chonburi province and forced him to pay ransom money.

Laurrent Thery, 51, told police that four foreigners broke into his factory in Banglamung district on 26 April, said Pol.Col. Prapansak Prasansuk, commander of Chonburi Immigration Police. Thery, who owns an halal food business, said the group forced him to hand over spare machine parts at the factory that cost 50,000 baht.

According to Pol.Col. Prapansak, the four men then took Thery to his residence and stole his laptop computer and mobile phone. One of the men also coerced Thery to transfer 15,000 baht to his bank account, Pol.Col. Prapansak said.

"After what happened, his family was really frightened, so they sought help from the police," Pol.Col. Prapansak told reporters.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old Russian man and a 45-year-old British man in connection with the crime. Pol.Col. Prapansak said the pair was identified by CCTV footage from the crime scene, and added that police are collecting evidence to arrest two other perpetrators.

This is so obviously a business thing and bugger all to do with extortion - an offence committed daily in Pattaya by just about every conceivable Mafia.

Which one's the Brit and which the Russian. I was thinking the guy on the left looked more British, but his name tag sounds Russian. Wrong placement of the name tags perhaps?

Probably - but it's not hard to think of reasons why he might not be too worrried, right?

Surprising to me, but there have been a couple of incidents during my stay in Jom Tien recently regarding Farang criminal activity.

Place I'm staying at is practically new and they're still furnishing rooms in some areas. A "white" guy ran into the lobby around 2 am last week and made off with 3 32" TV's that were still in boxes along a back wall, scared the crap out of the lone receptionist.

Also, while walking back from a late dinner to the same hotel I was stopped by a lady on scooter asking me where some other hotel was. I said I don't know, then she wanted me to get on the scooter and help her find it (!). I said no way, and she then looks at me and says, very slowly, "be careful". I cross the street, I'm only a few meters from my hotel, and some guy who seemed to be watching my exchange with the lady on the scooter - Russian maybe - hanging near the 7-11 starts to follow me as I walk by him. I duck into the lobby and immediately sit down and start texting on my phone. He hesitates right outside the door for a few seconds and then walks in, looks at me for a moment then looks around. I look right at him with the phone in my hand, trying to bring up the camera function. He walks quickly out the back way and around the building and disappears. I told the receptionist that I think I was followed and to be careful if she sees him again. Waited a few minutes in the lobby and then went to my room, making sure no one was around as I walked there.

I don't know if it's always been like this out here, but it seems petty criminal activity among farangs is the new normal.

Just because it is a 'business thing' doesn't mean it isn't extortion.

The Brit is the older guy, so he's the guy on the right

Bit of an update on Drummond's site regarding this story. As usual it involves his nemesis in Pattaya. Can't post a link as his site is now banned here in LoS.

So do you think that she was in cahoots with this sinister chap that flowed you or did she know you were about to get done over and was trying to help you get out of harms way?

Why was this matter handled by immigration police? And why on a charge involving 10,000 baht of goods seized plus 15,000 baht by bank transfer (total about £2,200) was Halland denied bail?

That seems a bit unfair because the guy who reported to him was none other than Drew Walter Noyes, of One-Stop-Service-Center and he has been glowing all week about the news. Noyes’ is to whom the Frenchman took his case.

Thor Halland, is a onetime property man, one time army officer, who settled in Pattaya many years ago. He was a big voice at the Pattaya City Expat Club which Drew Noyes claims he started – and he even wrote the Wikipedia entry for Pattaya and gave talks on the history of Thailand and even gave a talk to the Pattaya International Women's Club Club on Buddhism.

Halland is regarded as a bit of a toff even taking part in a local theatre group and of course pub quizzes.

Highly read in 2003 he had been on the winning University Challenge team from Birkbeck College, who were referred to as the ‘Birks’ because in a previous context they had achieved the lowest possible score.
Brian has outed Noyes as the rat snitch who lagged on Thor. I hope the Russians are mobbed up and are informed about who snitched them out. What a joke, Brian calling others criminals!

    ## Following Pattaya Court issuing the arrest warrants Thierry says Pattaya police were unable to locate Halland or Zabodaev, and as a result engaged One Stop Legal Services to locate these dangerous offenders.Pattaya Immigration office was supplied early this week with information from One Stop Legal Services which then allowed Police Colonel Prapansak, Superintendent of Pattaya Immigration, to arrest Halland and Zabodaev.

    I'm split on that.

The better part of me thinks it was a legit warning. Maybe she overheard something at the night market I just left?

The cynical part of me thinks she was sent to delay me while accomplices were arranging for an attack location, possibly even taking me there if I agreed to jump on the scooter with her.

My gut says she was trying to help, in her own way. But I really don't know. Just glad I was already close to the hotel when things became apparent.
