Another Aussie Accused of Abusing Philippines Children

PHILIPPINE police have arrested a 61-year-old Australian over allegations he sexually molested 14 Filipino children.

Michael Refalo was arrested while at an internet cafe on Camotes island, east of the island of Cebu on Wednesday, police said.

The arrest - on charges of human trafficking - comes four weeks after former Melbourne private school teacher Hilton Reece Munro, 46, hanged himself in a Cebu jail while awaiting trial over the alleged sex abuse of four Filipino boys as young as nine.

Philippine investigators have identified Cebu as the key hub of a billion-dollar cybersex industry where children, including toddlers, are forced to perform sex acts that are streamed online to paedophiles around the world.

In March, allegations against Melbourne man Peter Gerard Scully, 52, prompted calls for the Philippines to reintroduce the death penalty.

Scully is in a Philippines jail facing life imprisonment on charges of sexually abusing 11 children aged between 18 months and 13 years and the murder of one of his alleged victims, a 13 year-old girl he allegedly strangled.

Police described Scully's alleged crimes as the worst they had seen in the Philippines in decades.

Last year Victorian man Patrick Ronald Goggins, a 68-year-old Vietnam war veteran, was jailed for more than 11 years by a Melbourne court for paying four sisters aged between five and 15 years from Cebu to perform a range of sickening sex acts in front of a webcam.

When questioned by police, Goggins said his victims would be ''out on the scrapheap, living on rubbish'' if he did not pay them to perform.

Police said they intended to present Refalo at a press conference in Cebu where the allegations that he molested 14 girls would be detailed.

Human trafficking in the Philippines is a non-bailable offence.

So shall we just dispense with the trial and drag him straight to the scaffold?

It is a sad fact that many offenders are themselves victims of child abuse in one form or other, either from relatives or from employees or other trusted persons within a social care system.

Cutting them off with a rusty razor blade is so childish.

But then, that's the whole issue.

I expect it will probably come as news to your acquaintance too.

Let's hope they make him fully aware that this is his best option, and make sure that he has the tools for the job.

What you rarely hear about is the devastation these evil bastards cause and the families and lives they ruin. Most of them will not even admit to it even when they are carted off to the cells, if they do they blame the kids or claim it was 'consensual'.

I have, or had a younger sister with 2 kids, they all vanished in the UK after our mum died 20 years ago. I had another elder sister married to a bloke everyone thought of as a great guy. I only found out this year that my younger sister killed herself 10 years ago and her son did the same in 2012. The reason was the sexual abuse carried out by the 'great guy' on both kids from the age of 8. They did report it the the cops when they were older but they only gave him a warning, as their word against his, today he would have been charged. He later buggered off to live in Queensland Australia. He got away with ruining three lives and still denies he ever touched them, but in a slip said he never forced them to do anything. Peado's don't force they pursuade with I love you, you are special etc, easily done when no dad is around and everyone looks up to the pervert.

Obviously the legal systems, authorities, and society don't consider paedos a true hazard, as most don't serve enough time to be worthy...

Pedophiles can't be cured of their sexual preference for children, it is as inground in them as a heteros is for the opposite sex and no amount of psychobabble bs can change that fact. That should leave only two options for these types, life without possibility of release or death.

I'm just sorry he got away with it, I think most of them seem to. I did go out with a girl in the 80's who was abused by her step father and her brother. People always come out with- well why didn't they say anything at the time. She did and her mum got her put in a kids home, one that was run by a child abuser who eventually got 4 life sentences, she is hopelessly fucked up to this day.

About the only thing I can think of that comes close to being as evil as molesting children is falsely and maliciously accusing someone of doing it. Either way, it's a nightmare. I hope the Philippines Police and prosecutors at least have some sense of justice and fairness.

^Despite a rash of paedophile cases here recently, many in this same area, comments on Filipino blogs and news stories are skeptical about the veracity of these charges.

In my book, it's very much in the wait and see category at this point.

IF the ex set the bloke up AND he is completely innocent I hope the ex (he or she) gets exactly what the guy would have got if guilty.

He is just like the priests here in Australia, bible bashing pricks were molesting children for years. It's not just one or two, many were in on it, the guilty one's they should be burnt at the stake.

Australian, Filipina Sentenced to Life for Child Porn in Southern Philippines

A Philippine court sentenced an alleged Australian pedophile and his Filipina partner to life imprisonment Wednesday for operating a lucrative cybersex business that used children, officials said.

Judge Jose Escobido of the regional trial court in the southern city of Cagayan de Oro found the couple, Peter Gerard Scully, 55, and Carmen Ann Alvarez, guilty of qualified trafficking and sexual assault. Scully was also convicted separately of rape and given an additional nine years in jail.

Escobido was not immediately available for comment. A courtroom source said the two defendants were escorted by heavily armed police as they left the building.

“I can confirm that Scully was convicted of five counts of rape by sex assault and for qualified trafficking,” the source said.

Scully and Alvarez were caught in 2014 in a police raid at their apartment near Cagayan de Oro. Two girls, 9 and 11, whom the couple had sexually abused, had escaped and told police about Scully and Alvarez.

Police said the children were forced to perform sexual acts while being filmed, and that the video recordings were then sold by Scully to his global clients.

The victims managed to escape when Scully and Alvarez left the house to collect payment through money transfers.

Scully is also facing separate charges over the alleged rape of an 18-month-old girl and the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in the city of Surigao, about 283 km (176 miles) northwest of Cagayan de Oro.

Scully fled to the Philippines in 2011 to evade arrest after Australian authorities filed more than 100 fraud and deception charges against him in Melbourne, according to Philippine police.

During his stay in Mindanao, the Philippines’ main southern third, until his arrest in 2015, Scully was engaged in cybersex, investigators said. He earned as much as $10,000 (U.S. $200) per view from his pedophile clients, police said.
