Australian woman raped in Cambodian beach party town

Two Cambodian men have been charged with the multiple rape of an Australian woman after allegedly finding her asleep on a beach.

The 22-year-old woman had been at a party at the Waikiki Beach Club in Sihanoukville on Monday night where the two men lived and worked as waiters, The Cambodia Daily reported.

Sarith Sethy, 22, and Kuoy Pov, 17, allegedly found her asleep on O'Chheuteal Beach in front of the club and took her back to their room and each raped her.

The resort workers confessed after their arrest on Wednesday.

Provincial serious crimes bureau chief Nhet Phoan said the men told police they were unable to control themselves.

"They raped her because they couldn't control their feelings when they saw her sleeping alone on the beach," he said.

"When they saw the victim drunk and sleeping on the beach alone, Mr Sethy brought her to their room and raped her with his friend.

"The older man confessed to raping her two times, and the younger man to raping her only one time."

The two men were charged with rape on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Australian Embassy in Cambodia said it was ready to provide assistance to the woman.

"We are aware of reports of the alleged rape of an Australian woman in Sihanoukville earlier this week and stand ready to provide consular assistance," he said.

Daily flights to Sihanoukville have made it a popular destination for backpackers.

O'Chheuteal Beach, known as Serendipity Beach, has become a party zone, lined with restaurants, bars and accommodation.

One of the first rules I learned when I first travelled abroad, and particularly in S.E Asia was to always remain with at least one other person and preferably a group of people.

I wonder if she would have slept alone on a beach back in Australia.

Not blaming her but her terrible ordeal could have been avoided.

I don't think the Khmer have quite got the hang of things yet.

In these types of cases the appropriate response should have been the arrest of some Vietnamese or Thai visitor who happened to have been within a three mile radius of the incident. Finger pointing and lots of daft assumptions and jumping to ludicrous conclusions would have immediately confirmed guilt and, hey presto, you've got a conviction and the tourist board of Cambodia can continue to say what a lovely place Cambodia is, populated by caring, sharing, cute little pixie people who only love to play and cuddle whilst beaming smiles and dancing like fairies brushed with angel dust.

Essentially, Davis, it resolves to their default setting wherein most young folk from benefit societies inculcating the welfare principle, Australia is one of the foremost, have no sense of danger or threat that may prick that little bubble of security they are deluded into thinking travels with them.

Also, they have a poorly developed sense of personal responsibility which is a consequence of the belief that the State will always protect them.

Britain is full of it too but even worse there, it is riddled with a ghastly notion of self- entitlement that pervades most of the lower end and sustains them as they journey through life on the backs of others. When something bad happens to them, it is never, never their own fault.

loytoy.d knowlton and seeking asylum are on the money about this.
no one in their right mind would when they decide to have a party bender in se asia would decide, or get in such a mess to crash out on a public place when you put yourself in a high risk situation.
and being a young western female the risk goes up a million per cent.
does not matter what the femnazi's preach in the west, young women just have to be aware that there are scum males waiting for a chance to prove they are scum.
it beggars belief that she did not have one friend looking after her welfare or she thought it would be like OZ and she had a good chance to sleep it off.

The girl is all kinds of stupid, she couldn't had been a more obvious victim if she had it tattooed on her forehead.

But real justice would be for the woman to have her revenge on the 2 guys, rape them in turn or castrate them - justice shall prevail!

Sad what happened, though as mentioned, you don't get blind then sleep alone on a beach.

Something all women should take note of.

Could have been worse if she fell asleep on a beach in Koh Tao.

In all honesty, she's lucky to be alive.

^ I have visited Cambodia several times and found the locals far less aggressive than the Thais.

After Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge murdered around 25% of the population and the ensuing years of Civil War and Vietnamese occupation, the average Cambodian had had enough violence.

The story sounds odd to me, too.
The article doesn't give any details.

Perhaps she was out of it on one of these 'fun' substances in Cambo?

In Snooky now, and I watch the young backpackers get wasted.

    Young girls off their faces.

And I was thinking - it's a matter of time before something like this would happen.

Waikiki is on the strip, not hidden away. Nor are all the other beach bars.

In most female minds, we want and dream that men are there to protect us. Not abuse us.

Sadly, that is not the case. Watch the documentary India's Daughter, one of her rapists said that she asked for it because she was out after 8pm.

Why would any woman curl up and sleep on a beach alone is beyond my way of thinking. In strange countries being surrounded by people is the best deterant from saddos who think this sort of behaviour is normal.

I hope they suffer and she gets justice.

Anyone can get drunk, i do it quite often - but i have always had a brain cell and friends that look out for me as i would do for them.

When Loy Toy eventually comes to Geneva and we go for a drink or two i shall definately make sure we are in the most loud and raucous pub!!

Maybe a beach in a 3rd world country isn't a good place to sleep for a young westerner no ?

Yes women certainly do have rights, but for some reason that at argument never works with rapists, odd that

Agree with you...Quite possible that her drink was spiked...Just spoke with a Thai friend of mine who went to Bangkok Beat in Soi 7/1...Said she was awakened the next morning in the fooking medium under the SkyTrain by a ladyboy with everything stolen...

She figured it was the bitches sitting at the table with her the night before who wanted her expensive new handbag, among other things...

She had absolutely no recollection, and if you know how busy Sukhumvit is, she was lucky to have crossed to the center "piss-station" and still be alive...
