Thai PM Prayuth says he will 'probably execute' journalists who do not report 'truth'

Thai junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha has lashed out at journalists, saying he would "probably just execute" those who did "not report the truth".

The comments were the latest outburst aimed at Thailand's media. Last month Mr Prayuth said he had the power to shut down news outlets. On Wednesday, he took an even harsher line.

"We'll probably just execute them," said Mr Prayuth, without a trace of a smile, when asked by reporters how the government would deal with those who did not adhere to the official line.

"You don't have to support the government, but you should report the truth," the former army chief said, telling reporters to write in a way that bolstered national reconciliation in the kingdom.

Mr Prayuth was particularly critical of the Thai-language Matichon daily newspaper, accusing it of siding with ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies.

"Don't think I don't know that your writing is pro the previous administration," he told a Matichon reporter shortly before boarding a plane to Brunei.

"The previous interior ministry bought many advertising spaces from you."
Mr Prayuth, who is also prime minister, heads the ruling junta, or National Council for Peace and Order.

Known for his abrupt manner and impulsive remarks, Mr Prayuth launched a crackdown on dissenters after he toppled the government of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in a coup last May.

He has said Thailand was not ready to lift martial law, which gives the army sweeping powers that include arrest and detention.

In January the junta forced a German foundation to cancel a forum on press freedom, saying Thailand was at a sensitive juncture.

Since taking power, the junta has made full use of martial law, which also bans all political gatherings.

They really are the funniest little people, aren't they.

One never tires of observing them. Thailand is simply better than any comedy production ever made.

Once he starts executing reporters the end is nigh.

They simply have no insight into their condition, these old chaps in uniform who have spent their entire adult lives existing in a vacuum of privilege and total power answerable only to their chums.
Quite frightening really but a tremendous reminder of just how good a real country truly is. Americans of course won't understand that but I'm sure they can use their imagination.

You're right, 2015 America sucks but I console myself by being thankful I'm not British.

^^ Good point, doubt if Drummond's sudden departure was a coincidence. Of course there is one thing that looks worse than the media talking about a countries problems; it's the media being ordered or threatened not to.

Err, Didn't he just summon a TV reporter for telling the truth about Thai fishing boats involved in that Indonesian seafood scandal? His definition of truth is not the same as the rest of the world.

I'm quite sure Prayut doesn't want the truth reported - just his version of the truth.

PM warns media to toe the line or face “consequences”

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha today warned some media representatives that they may face consequences if they continue to report in a way which is threatening national interests.

The prime minister specifically identified a Channel 3 reporter, Ms Thapanee Iadsrichai, and warned that she must report herself to authorities concerned for her reportage of the recent seizure of Thai fishing boats in Indonesia.

He asked if the media would take the responsibility if the European Union stops buying seafood products from Thailand because of the Thai media’s negative reporting about Thai fishing industry.

The media, said the prime minister, must bear in mind of the impacts of their reportage to national interests. He added that the government had not shied away from helping Thai fishermen arrested overseas.

He asked for understanding from the media, insisting that he is not a politician, has no vested interests “but still a human being who is sensitive.”

He warned that he might be forced to invoke his special powers to deal with media which bent on biased reporting in a way which may cause political conflict.

Yet, the big steam have to be quite pleased as to how things are working out these days - such present conditions have always been to their liking.

Here's the only photo I could find of the offender, Thapanee "Yam" Iadsrichai, and a Nation story from a couple of years ago giving a little info about her. Seems like a major threat to national security to me (not). Couldn't find the report on Thai fishing boats that she's being singled out for.

Just like the late Lee Kuan Yew, and he is a hero.

The missus reminded me this am that Prayuth used to be one of Taksin's henchmen back in the day so he's definitely got experience 'disappearing' people.
