Koh Samui’s Criminal Element Wakes to 700 Soldiers and Police

Quite impressive by the sound of it: Dawn raids in Koh Samui by 700 police and soldiers - Samui Times
This morning at 6am 700 police and army officers carried out a dawn raid in Koh Samui. During the raid 26 dawn raids 4individuals were targeted. Soldiers armed with machine guns were lowered onto the island from helicopters as homes around the island were raided. Some homes were raided via the roof in scenes that looked like something out of an action movie. Many of the homes owners came out looking bewildered still dressed in night attire.
    ---
" hundreds of tourists were witness to the crime, authorities are gravely concerned that acts will have a negative effect on tourism" Not to mention the response. . .
"Ruengsri Travel in Bophut was among the targets this morning, however, little was recovered in the raid, only 2 bullets and a few training bullets."

Ah, well, training bullets, no point making a fuss about them. What's a "training bullet"?

I think they mean the first one, "the very public execution of a prominent local businessman, the 49 year old man was gunned down while having dinner in a restaurant in the popular Fishemen’s village"- not "700 police and army officers" making the most dramatic entrance they could possibly think of.

It's an island, fellas. Nobody's going anywhere. Just sayin'.

Koh Samui’s Criminal Element Awake to 700 Soldiers and Police

KOH SAMUI – Pol Maj Gen Thitirat Nonghanpitak, acting Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), told reporters that 700 police and soldiers raided known haunts of gunmen and criminals on Koh Samui Island Friday Morning, code named operation “Dawn on Samui.”

Pol Maj Gen Thitirat Nonghanpitakin told the Bangkok Post the attempt was to clampdown on organized crime in the wake of the public murder of a major building contractor early this month.

The police and soldiers searched 23 locations, arriving at some by helicopter, seized firearms and ammunition and arrested five suspects.

Pol Maj Gen Thitirat, said operation “Dawn on Samui” was aimed at suppressing influential people and members of organized crime.

He said the murder of Phanas Khao-uthai, 49, a major building contractor on Koh Samui, who was shot dead in front of many foreign tourists on Fisherman’s Village walking street in the evening of March 6.

“Koh Samui had become plagued by crime and it was affecting the tourism industry, criminals were fighting over speedboat and taxi services and businesses on walking street. The conflicts between influential groups included murder and were scaring tourists and local residents.”

Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers, local police, commandos and soldiers raided 23 locations believed to house gangsters, gunmen and influential people, starting about 6am.

One of the targets was the house of Wiwat Chuenban, also known as Luk Poweng, the 41-year-old owner of Ruangsri Travel Co, in Bo Phut sub-district.

Commandos forced their way into his house by land and from the air while the residents were sleeping.

In total, authorities seized 13 guns, 835 bullets, three kilogram of krathom leaves and gear used for smoking marijuana during the raids.

Police also arrested three suspects, including Mr Wiwat, for firearms possession and two other suspects for possession of of an illegal substance.

Pol Maj Gen Thitirat said if influential groups did not stop their warfare on Koh Samui, more such raids would occur because authorities want to improve the image of the tourist island.

Kao Tao should be next, maybe they can find time to arrest the real murderers.

^ Think of it as the Thai military's version of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Seriously wonder how well they planned this; in order for it to be any kind of surprise, they would need to assemble the 700 soldiers and police and only tell them the destination at the last moment, after their cell phones had been confiscated.

Next thing we know, there'll be Thai marines raiding Thai fishing boats and arresting Burmese, working illegally.

On second examination, all the guns ammunition and krathom leaves were found on the persons of the military and police prior to their embarking on this training exercise...serious issues these folks have regarding "reality."

They found a few pop-guns, couple hundred bullets, a bong (so far it sounds like they raided the bedroom of my redneck cousin in Florida), and a leaf that people have been chewing for thousands of years in Thailand and nobody really cares about. Also arrested a couple of guys. Wow.

On the other hand, great theater. Not the sort of thing the tourists on hand expected, but those are the sort of holiday memories that stay with you. Maybe they could add a reenactment to the Siam Niramit shows.
