AirAsia’s new ASEAN Pass has been officially released, offering one month of travel between ten different countries for just 5,300 baht ($160).

The promotion launched Monday, February 23, and offers flights to and from all 10 different ASEAN nations: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Burma, Laos and Brunei.

Most participating countries have several different cities to which pass-holders can fly, using a credits system that designates each authorised route with either 1 or 3 credits.

AirAsia’s hub in Kuala Lumpur offers the widest range of destinations, but there are quite a few from Bangkok as well.

The pass itself comes in two different types.

The AirAsia ASEAN Pass costs 5,300 baht and contains 10 credits with 30 days validity from the first flight.

The AirAsia ASEAN Pass + costs 9,300 baht and contains 20 credits with 60 days validity.

In essence, the new travel pass offers multi-city travellers the opportunity to cover a lot of ground for quite a low sum. In fact, the price of one 10-credit pass, which could take you to up to 10 countries, is in some cases less than the cost of a single flight on some of the applicable routes.

The pass is open to all nationalities and users may purchase up to 5 passes at a time, and on behalf of others as long as they switch the name prior to flight. Passes are valid for a year after purchase, with the 30 or 60 day period beginning only after the first flight is redeemed.

However, there are several restrictions to keep in mind:

- All flights purchased with ASEAN Pass credits must be booked minimum 14 days in advance.

- Repeat routes are not allowed. You may use the pass, for example, to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and back, but you may not fly to and fro multiple times between the same cities with the same pass.

- Airport tax and any add-ons such as check-in baggage, inflight meals, seats and travel insurance are to be paid separately.

- Travellers must be 12 years or older to qualify.

- Flight redemption is “limited and subject to seat's availability” and may not be available on peak flying days such as holidays and weekends.
