Seven Africans have been arrested in Pattaya for having allegedly cheated over 100 Thai women of some 10 million baht in marriage and investment scams through the Internet.
The seven suspects were rounded up by Pattaya police at LV Apartment in Soi Chalermkiat 17, South Pattaya, on Saturday. Seven computer notebooks, 11 smart phones and three tablets were found in their apartment rooms and seized.
Police said that all had overstayed their visas and would face charges of illegal immigration and fraud.
According to the police, members of the gang would use the matching programmes in the Internet to get in touch with their targeted victims and claimed themselves as being retiring European businessmen looking for Thai female companions to settle down in Thailand.
The alleged frauds would normally use pictures of good-looking white men to impress their targeted victims instead of using their own. Once the victims were convinced, police said the gang members would try all the tricks, mostly business offers with irresistible high returns to lure them to wire their money into their bank accounts.
Police have asked victims to show up to identify the gang.
