Here is my perspective and its that of a father and a long time resident of Thailand. In fact I came here thousands of years ago to run bungalows and a restaurant on Samui.

I have twin daughters in the final year of 6th form here, last year the first part of February they went to Koh Tao on a school expedition and got PADI scuba certifed. It was also the cheapest expedition on offer. This year they will go back with the schools support albeit with a few more security people. They want their deep water certificate and I support their decision and happiness to go. Leaving on February 7 for a 7 night trip.

I do remember just aching to get back to Samui all those years ago yearly before I moved over. That is how they feel coupled with freedom, the beach, more certification, and no thoughts about the final A levels they have to take, or which uni in America accepts them.

They do stay on the other side of the island which they love, because its so near the pier and all the dive boats. They have never seen the backpacker side of the island yet still love it for simply its pristine beauty once you set out to sea.

I really have no qualms about them going, but have to admit this last one was a kick in the ass that neither Thailand with enough problems already or Koh Tao itself need. I am not going to speculate. I just hope they one hell of a time again. I know if the British embassy puts out a major warning about no travel the school would cancel. I hope they get to go.

The British Embassy will not do that, they have no reason to.

If they go down that route mose well put a warning out on all of Thailand but that would be a tad silly and certainly not warranted.

Considering how many people get offed in Pattaya one would think the World would put a travel warning out on that place.

People who do not involve themselves in risky behavior rarely come to any grief.

They will be absolutely fine. Just hope the " P " don't get em.

Could you please explain how you came to the conclusion that there are now 5 proven murders down there ?

Some one said the guy was beaten and thrown off the cliff ?

Simply not true that. Nothing off the sort proven and at this time its all opinion.

Fair enough having an opinion on these things but does not make it fact.
terry, my post said 5 deaths in "questionable circumstances", i really do not think there is much debate about that, but feel free to bluster.

I feel that the attention shared towards Samui is nothing short of fashionable drama....

Here. It's pretty clear that there's a link. That doesn't necessarily indicate guilt but there is a quite obvious link

I admire your faith in the school and the system AO. I hope and trust that your daughters and their friends have a happy, productive and safe time there.
I have 5 sons and I would have serious reservations about any of them traveling there. If I had daughters as lovely as yours, I would be contacting SEAL team six to watch over them for the duration.
Keep them safe and hope they return unharmed and happy.

If they don't go to a bar and knock back the advances of local males then they may be okay.

I suppose this is what happens when the local monkeys can control their own little island paradise fiefdom, free from any law and order, knowing that scapegoats are only a fingerpoint away and any copper that really gets involved is transferred the next day.

I don't have a good intuitive feeling about this trip.

The probabilities are that it will be absolutely fine.

But why take a chance. Even a 20-1 against chance?

There is something clearly wrong with Ko Tao. The chicos there are outlaws and until that is set right, why should potentially vulnerable teenagers grace the island with their presence - when there are alternatives?

Hate to tell you guys this,

At this very moment Koh Tao is in the middle of the high season, the place is rammed full with young people partying, getting on the piss, indulging in drug taking, risky behaviour, riding motor bikes pissed up with no helmet, shagging unknown strangers, diving everyday and generally having the time of their life.

Whats different from 10 years before ?

Fuk all, except two punters have been killed and a few others have died in unknown circumstances.

Time comes when a place has a run of bad luck, time has come for Koh Tao.

Remember Laos and Vang Vieng ?

Jesus, A tourist a week was offing themselves there for a while.

All plays out in the end.

Many thousands of people enjoying that Island with no probs at all.

    No story here.

Hey, but what about all the Deaths In Pattaya. ?

Koh Tao's nothing compared to that spot EH.

I don't go to Tao any more so I'm not concerned only adding a opposite side to some of the hysteria that is getting written.

Some turd recons there is a serial killer on the lose. ?

Hate to tell you this terry, but I expect tourists on Koh Tao to dies from risky behaviour, diving accidents, riding motorbikes with no helmets, etc.

I don't expect them to be hanging from rafters with their hands behind their backs, or raped and murdered on the beach.

Koh Tao beats Phuket in Tripadvisor Top 10 islands

PHUKET: Governor Nisit Jansomwong recently expressed his disappointment that not one of Phuket’s beaches features among the top 100 beaches in the world.

He will no doubt also be disappointed to find that Phuket also no longer appears in the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice list of the Top 10 Islands in the World.

What makes the blow more bitter for Phuket is that in 10th place in the world is Koh Tao – despite the notorious murders of British Tourists David Miller and Hannah Witheridge in September last year, and frantic Internet discussion about gangsters and godfathers, violence, corruption and lawlessness on that island.

Tripadvisor makes no mention of the murders, describing Koh Tao thus: “Drifting serenely in the Gulf of Thailand, the palm-fringed island of Ko Tao takes its name from the abundant sea turtles that reside on its shores. White sand beaches sheltered by steep hills – some only accessible with four-wheel drive vehicles – and 300 days of sun per year invite long afternoons of lounging.”

Phuket does make it into Tripadvisor’s Top 10 islands in Asia, in seventh place, but behind Koh Lanta (4th), Koh Pa’ngan (3rd) and, yes, in first place, Koh Tao.

It remains to be seen whether Koh Tao’s ranking will be battered by two more recent deaths on the island – of Frenchman Dimitri Povse on New Year’s Day and British woman Christina Annesley just two days ago.

I can see your point mate and its valid. Thing is, where tourists travel danger is not that far away.

Especially as a newbie backpacker on a paradise Island, one feels invincible in the beginning. I did anyway.

As far as the Murders go, really bad stuff but unfortunately this stuff happens.

The guy who hung himself had been on a massive bender, really not that hard to top one self the way he did.

On the chair, noose around the neck, tie the hands and step through. Jump off, job done.

I'm not arguing about any off this stuff but we need to look at the big picture and sort through the scenarios.

    Must keep things in perspective.

...and antibiotics aren't any stronger than anywhere else - considering that they're passed out like candy here.
