Chiang Mai authorities are preparing for this year's Loy Kratong and Yi Peng festivals, which will take place from November 5-7.

Provincial governor Suriya Prasartbandit told reporters yesterday that the theme of this year's festivities was having fun without giant fireworks or alcohol.

The extended festivities will take place from November 1-7, with various activities in downtown Chiang Mai including a lantern festival, kratong processions and a fireworks display in honour of His Majesty the King.

People are being urged not to buy large fireworks this year, and Deputy Mayor Nutchudej Wiriyadiloktham said Chiang Mai municipality and police had asked shops to cooperate by not selling them. Shops in the city centre close to the festival sites have also been asked not to sell alcohol.

As part of the festivities, the 23rd Yi Peng Lantern Festival will be held at Thapae Road and Changklan Road in the evenings from November 5-7.

The festival of Loy Kratong is celebrated across Thailand, as well as in Laos and parts of eastern Burma, by people floating kratong - decorated baskets - on rivers. It coincides with the northern Thai festival of Yi Peng, which is celebrated by people launching Lanna-style sky lanterns.
