Thai Rubber Producers Eye Own Tyre Factory

B3bn proposal to be floated to growers

The Rubber Growers Cooperative Federation of Thailand has plans to involved rubber planters in establishing a tyre factory in Thailand, with an estimated investment of three billion baht. Federation chairman Perk Lertwangpong said the project opened up an investment opportunity for all rubber farmers and would be a boost for local business. Most rubber is grown in the South.

He described the proposal as a "significant strategy" for rubber growers to assist each other, instead of relying on others. He said several financial institutions had expressed interest in providing the capital for the investment.

The idea would be discussed further at a federation meeting on Wednesday.

The federation would try to explain the project to rubber growers nationwide, starting in the South and later to the Northeast and the North.

Rubber planters are unhappy with the falling price of rubber. The buying price of unsmoked rubber sheet was around 50 baht a kilogramme on Monday, less than a third of its peak at 172 baht a kilo in February 2011.

    Ideals are steadfast.
I would be delighted to see more agricultural/horticultural communities gather as social/political unified collectives.

If it were strong, imagine the influence such would have on the real economy.

    Brilliant idea.
Convince a bunch of farmers to mortgage their chanote farms by offering over realistic returns and a pie int he sky dream of control.
Steal the usual 30% during construction then run the place into the ground with dodgy deals and inept management.
Once it all goes bust step in and pick it and the chanotes up for a song.
    Fiendishly clever.

^ not to mention that the reason the rubber industry is in decline is that modern tires use synthetic substitutes. That and there are already tire factories in Thailand. Like Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone.

China's Shandong Linglong Tyre Co. Ltd. has commissioned production at its newest plant — a $115 million car and light truck tire factory — in Thailand's Rayong Province.
The sad fact is that rubber prices are going down because it is a world commodity and there is a glut.

Part of the problem is that natural rubber trees planted during 2005-2008 -- when prices were healthier -- are now ready to be tapped
Boom and bust all over again.

    Good intent.

Yet, the Thai crux is that they don't organize politically in this fashion.
They'll continue to whine about this and that, but won't challenge the controlling corruption.

The raw rubber will need transporting to the factory. The truckers will be the new middle men (or actually the same middle men as before).

They need to face facts. It is no longer a viable crop for small producers. End of story.
