Girl, 10, raped at the command of village chief

A TEN-year-old girl has been ordered to be raped by a village chief because her dad beat up a man trying to molest his wife in India’s latest shocking sex crime.

The Times of India reports the girl has been raped at the behest of a village chief in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand in the most recent incident in the country’s seemingingly unstoppable tide of violence against women.
Police said that the rape followed a confrontation on Monday night when a 25-year-old man barged into the victim’s house in an inebriated state, trying to molest the child’s mother.
Her husband then beat up the attacker and threw him out.

The following morning, the man went to the chief of the village in Bokaro district, police said, and complained of being assaulted. A spokesman added that an assembly of elders was convened to determine how best to punish the violent husband.
The families of the victim and the attacker were summoned to the meeting, where the village chief allegedly directed the man to rape the ten-year-old girl to avenge the assault, police said.
The man is then claimed to have dragged the girl into bushes a short distance away and raped her, ignoring her mother’s cries. An hour later, the mother retrieved her daughter from the bushes, where she lay soaked in blood, police said.
As horrifying as this incident is, it is just one of the estimated 25,000 rape cases which are reported across India each year.

Truly a bizarre and disgusting method of 'justice'. If this story is true, the assembly of elders and the man who committed the assault and rape should be held fully accountable.

I'll admit my naivety and a lack of knowledge about India as I've never been there and have not studied about its customs and laws.

Do you think this action by the assembly of elders is considered a legal method of justice there?

Anyone else have a fair enough understanding of their ways to answer that one?

^I lived there for three years, and in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for another four. My point, which I thought was quite clear, was that if you expect ANY accountability, you will be greatly disappointed. A girl in a rural Indian village has less value than a chicken.

^This happened in a small village in the ass-end of Eastern India in a mining area. Dirt poor, forever ignorant. The central government, such as it is, doesn't know or care that this place exists. Mud huts, people still trying to cope with walking erect. No electricity, no nothing. Except generations of ignorance, reinforced by the caste system which is still strong in rural India. The banjo-picking inbred kid from Deliverance would be a Rhodes scholar in that village.

The central government doesn't even take action on rapes on public transportation in New Delhi. The chances of them even voicing an opinion on some rural atrocity is zero. Village elders and tribal chiefs make the rules. There will be no accountability - nobody cares...as they have demonstrated time and time again.

Surely there is someone in that god forsaken place that has the balls to go and off the mongrels that would do that to an innocent 10 yr old girl.

That place needs a healthy spraying with Ebola. Should be easy to get some at the moment.

Ploplem is, if ebola does take hold our glorious leaders would fall in line behind the WHO about sorting it out.

    Gunships, baseball bats, whatever hurts.

Yet more evidence there is no frickin god.

The human race perhaps would be better extinct ...even animals do not behave this way!
Time for for an asteroid collision perhaps?

In the shorter term would like to see these frickin "elders" stripped naked over a barrel covered in "in heat" heifer pheromones and introduce a few bulls.....

Hopefully the 10 year old will grow up with enough anger to exact her revenge.....

The state is estimated to hold 40% of the mineral resources of India, so I'm sure the central government are very much aware of its existence. A largely tribal area I believe, and a relatively small percentage of scheduled castes.

This incident is getting a fair amount of global media coverage, and coming so soon after the negative attention the country found itself being the subject of following the bus rapes, and countryside child hangings, I think the government will make a quick example of these people to the world.

^It would be nice if you were correct. The girl appears to have been 14, not that it makes any difference, and three people have been arrested. The problem with stories such as these (with the exception of the New Delhi rapes) is that there is rarely follow-up. My bet would be that those arrested are quickly and quietly released.

    I wanted to rebut you, oh how I did. So off I went to check out the major Indian newspapers;
    Times of India- Nothing, but the paper carries such important articles in the "womens" section on beauty pageants, and in the front section;
-Katrina Kaif takes Neetu Singh out for dinner
-Aditya & I started dating only post his divorce’
-Remember these tunes from ads? Let's sing along!
-Priyanka Chopra turns singer for Mary Kom
-How to flirt when you are married

Ok, it's one major paper. You have to be wrong, so, let's check out the Indian Express which bills itself as "Journalism of Courage". Buried deep in the paper is a feed from the Press Trust of India, "Police depolys (sic) precautionary posse in ‘retaliatory’ rape victim’s village". No mention of arrest, no arrests, no investigation reported on and certainly no evidence of courage of journalism.
Looks like I have it wrong and I must offer an apology of sorts for doubting your better grasp of the locals. I have been to India once and it was enough for me. I stepped in human poop at the main railway station in Delhi, and that says it all.

All I can say is that if this is the tourist market Thailand is pursuing, may Providence have mercy.

Minor's rape in Jharkhand: Rajya Sabha members seek action - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Cutting across party lines, members of Rajya Sabha condemned the rape of a minor Dalit girl in Jharkhand, allegedly on the diktat of a village elder. Members requested the government to take necessary action and inform the House.

"Necessary action will be initiated in the serious matter after taking up the issue with the Prime Minister," minister for social justice and empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot assued the House.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Prabhat Jha (BJP) said heads should hang in shame over the incident, alleging that an influential village elder issued a diktat for raping the minor girl with the entire village remaining a mute spectator. He said the girl was dragged and raped but none could come to her rescue while the hapless father and mother of the victim had to face much difficulty in lodging the complaint with local police. "I appeal to the government of India to ensure justice to her. This kind of incidents cannot happen in India... strict action is needed," Jha said, as members cutting across party lines shouted "shame, shame".

Leader of the opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "Entire police machinery and the village should be held accountable. This is a question of neither A nor B government. How can we allow this? Last year a legislation was passed, what happened to it?" Ashwani Kumar (Cong) demanded that the government apprise the House of the action it has taken in the matter.

Deputy chairperson P J Kurien, who was in the chair, remarked, "The entire House is one on the issue. This being a heinous crime on a minor, government should enquire and come to House. Also, if such a crime has happened serious action should be taken."

See disgusting Indian rape cases before, I followed Indian newspapers. The comments sections (this your ordinary Indian? no, but ones having access to internet) made me sick. About 50% said girl was at fault. Dark ages. Sick. Read it.
