Girl raped, killed on overnight train in Thailand

Girl raped, killed on overnight train in Thailand
    July 8, 2014

BANGKOK (AP) — The rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, who was shoved off a moving train on an overnight trip from southern Thailand, has sparked public outrage and calls for capital punishment for rapists.

The body of the girl was discovered early Tuesday morning near the train tracks in Prachuap Khirikhan province's Pranburi district, said Police Col. Napanwut Liemsa-nguan, the commander of the police's Children and Women Protection Division.

The girl, who was returning with her sisters from a visit to their grandmother, had disappeared Saturday night from a sleeping berth en route from the southern province of Surat Thai to the capital, Bangkok. The route is also popular among backpackers traveling back from Thailand's island and beach resort destinations.

"Rape cases on public transportation do not occur very often in Thailand, but this case shows that there are loopholes in the system's security which allowed the offender to commit the crimes," Napanwut said.

The man arrested was a railway worker. Napanwut said the suspect told police he was intoxicated from methamphetamine and beer when carrying out the attack. He faced charges of rape, concealing a body and murder, which carries the death penalty.

On Instagram, Thai entertainment stars and celebrities joined the chorus of calls for the law to be changed to make rape punishable only by death. Convicted rapists now face a sentence of four to 20 years in prison and a fine.

Nonthawan "Maeya" Thongleng, the recently-crowned Miss Thailand World 2014, displayed a poster on Instagram calling for a change in the law and commented: "I've always thought of this. I want it changed already. Be more strict, please. #Rapistsmustbeexecuted Don't let this cruel incident happen again and again. RIP Nong Kaem," (the nickname of the victim).

A petition on the online social movement website Change.org that called on Thailand's military leader to make such a legal change attracted nearly 15,000 signatures within one day. Thailand's army ousted an elected civilian government in May.

"The offenders, once arrested and sentenced, usually get pardoned and released from jail. And when they get out, they commit the crime again and again to the point that judicial power in Thailand is no longer sacred," the petition read.

Col. Winthai Suvaree, a spokesman for the ruling junta, said its leader, Army Commander Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, urged the authorities to quickly prosecute the perpetrator and called on the relevant agencies to seek extra safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

"We must call a meeting with every side involved and will have to revise our recruitment process," State Railway of Thailand governor Prapas Chongsa-nguan told The Associated Press.

Missing Thai girl found dead, raped
    July 8, 2014

Bangkok, July 8 (IANS) The body of a 13-year-old girl who went missing on Sunday from a train in Thailand was found on Tuesday.

The girl was travelling in an overnight train on Sunday from the southern province of Surat Thani to Bangkok, the Bangkok Post reported.

According to officials, the girl's naked body was found on Tuesday around 4.00 a.m in Wang Pong sub-district.

Earlier Monday, a 22-year-old bedsheet replacement employee of the State Railway of Thailand, confessed to raping and killing the girl, before throwing her body out of a window.

The accused said that he he opened a window of the non-air-conditioned car where the girl was sleeping so that the wind blocked other noise before attacking her.

After raping the girl, he killed her and threw her body off the train as it was approaching the Wang Pong station.
He then threw the girl's clothes and blood stained sheets.

The latest news I've seen indicates the killer was stupid enough to steal the girl's phone and was tracked down after he took it to Bkk and sold it to someone else.

It will be interesting to see what punishment is dealt in this case. Will it lead to his execution? I don't think he will get off lightly, but this is Thailand.

These people are narcissist psychopaths who needs attention.

A hundred years ago we would have called them evil and had them banished or eliminated. But today because we are advanced humans we intellectualise them, their writings, their words and actions trying to understand what makes them tick and more importantly what made them snap. And sometimes the uncontrollably liberal even blame us for their fall, unable to accept that they may be inherently evil, so it must be something we did or didn't do that contributed to their infamy.

And when we do that we make the mistake of assuming that their weakness for drink and drugs or their perceived grievances against society made them kill, instead of being the excuse that allowed them to kill.

    I say off him.

You know mate, the world is fuked simply because we have these do gooders saying that the Death penalty is wrong and human life is sacred.

I say a big fuk that shit. Human beings can be Animals, many are simply evil and nothing more than the lowest of the low.

Human life ain't sacred, many need to be annihilated for the greater good.

In a straight out case like this just walk him out the back and cap him.

    Easy as that, job done.

I really despise do gooders, they shit me.

I'm not being a funny fucker here, but I wonder about the wisdom of the parents allowing a 13 year old girl to travel alone on an overnight train , poor fuckers likely thought that such a vile occurance would surely never happen in the land of smiles, That kind of shit only happens on Farang telly and movies, I think we can safely saythailand has lost it innocence, at least for me it has, as a parent this shit sickens me , but I can cast my mind back to an overnight trip from Bangkok to chaing mai over 30 years ago where me and my mates spent most of the trip drinking Mekong whiskey with the train staff, great laughs, but now makes me wonder what the fuckers get up to, when the drunken farangs weren't amusing them. Fockin sad really

Three sisters and the elder's boyfriend. They were about the same age as my three Thai nieces so it struck home when I heard the story.

Apparently the charged employee was only 22 and blamed it on yabaa rather than beer.

Bollocks on a silver platter may be his best defence in court....

Yep and if anyone was really interested in cleaning up Thailand it is the huge drugs industry they would be tackling, not to mention the overwhelming amount of financial crime.

Visa runners, motorcycle taxis, street vendors encroaching on pavements, sun loungers on beaches. The real criminals in this country must be terrified.

Additional news about the background of the rapist from a Bangkok Post article dated July 11

    ************************************************** ***************

An SRT source said Wanchai Saengkhao, the alleged murderer, was a relative of a C-6 level SRT official, who allegedly used his connections to arrange for Mr Wanchai to be recruited as an SRT worker. He was hired by the SRT to make beds in sleeper carriages.

The source said the SRT executives had summoned Mr Wanchai’s relative for questioning and he admitted he was related to Mr Wanchai.

The SRT is investigating claims that Mr Wanchai previously raped two female co-workers early this year. Police are looking for the alleged victims.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the rape and murder case has deepened. A source in the SRT said the agency is also investigating if Mr Wanchai’s relative had any knowledge of Mr Wanchai’s alleged criminal record. The relative could face severe disciplinary action if the SRT finds he had such knowledge and still arranged for Mr Wanchai to work at the SRT, the source said.

Video of Police Slapping Murder-Rape Suspect Causes Stir

BANGKOK — A video of a police officer smacking a rape and murder suspect during his interrogation has highlighted divisions in Thai society over how rape crimes should be punished.
In the four-second video, which first surfaced on social media on 9 July, a police officer can be seen assaulting Wanchai Saengkhao, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) employee who police say confessed to raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl on a night train on 6 July.

Many commentators on social media have applauded the action depicted in the video, arguing that Mr. Wanchai deserves much more than a smack or two for his alleged crime.

"I am so tired of these beautiful-world and human rights people who defend this animal from hell," one commentator wrote. "If the person who was raped were your relative, will you really do nothing? Even though I am not her relative, I want to stamp this fucking monster to death under my feet."

Outrage over the rape and death of the 13-year-old girl has recently ignited an online campaign for punishing convicted rapists with the death penalty. Under current Thai laws, those convicted of rape can face 5-20 years in prison.

However, the video has also raised concerns among some that Mr. Wanchai’s confession may have obtained under duress; Thai police have a history of coercing suspects to confess during interrogation.

"We have to respect laws," wrote another commentator. "Don't use our affection or disaffection to judge. A police officer hurting a suspect [like this] could be considered a criminal case as well."

Mr. Wanchai is currently being detained at Prachuap Kiri Khan Provincial Prison. Prison officials said Mr. Wanchai will be under special watch to prevent him from committing suicide or being assaulted by other inmates after a rape suspect was beaten to death in prison yesterday.

Police have charged Mr. Wanchai with murder, sexual assault, theft, and drug abuse.

Meanwhile, the case also took a supernatural turn, with mother of the victim reportedly claiming that she was visited in her dreams by her dead daughter.

According to a report on Matichon, the victim's mother said her daughter has informed her that Mr. Wanchai wasn't the only suspect, and that "there were many people" who killed her.

The victim also claimed to continue to haunt the train where she was murdered, her mother said.

A good article providing a valuable insight into the third world, medieval nature of Thai society.
