Two Foreign Teens Electrocuted at Sukumvit Condominum

American and Iranian teens electrocuted to death by poolside lamp

Two teens were electrocuted to death by a lamp after getting of a swimming pool at a condominium on Sukhumvit Soi 22 last night.

The victims were Iranian and American foreign nationals, both 16.
According to the investigation, the deceased were swimming in the pool with some friends before the incident. As they got off the pool at around midnight, the boys unknowingly leaned against a lamp by the pool which sent an electrical jolt into their wet bodies.

Their friends called for the condo’s staff to cut the electricity, but it was too late.
Their bodies will be sent to Chulalongkorn Hospital for an autopsy while the lamp will be inspected for leakage, Daily News reported.

Found it. The place is called the Charming residence off Sainamthip 2.

^agree that's not the first I've heard of being killed by the wiring in Thailand.

    What a waste. RIP.

    Too common.
Massive argument in our bush house with wife and the "electrician" who were convinced that because we had rcbo's we didn't need an earth.
Then he tried to earth the appliances by running a bare wire to an aluminum window frame......

A needless loss of young lives.

The electrical system is so bad in our rented house, I have to remember to wear rubber soled shoes before switching on the hi-fi system, otherwise I get an annoying zap if I touch anything metal connected to it. I believe the lack of proper grounding is what the problem is. The entire house wiring should probably be re-done by a competent electrician to make it safe.

Had a so called Electrician come to my Apartment to install 10 power points from an existing socket that had red ,black, green wires.

Babies work, join the wires together and extend the run in conduit.

Fuker run red and black but no green " Earth "

So friggin easy but he did not do it.

My fault for not watching him.

I think the main problem is that there are many unskilled punters doing electrical work.

I doubt very much if a fully trained Electrician would ignore the Earth.

Maybe I'm wrong here but when one sees Electrical work in major new projects and Hotels it seems to be fine.

But how hard to earth a house that isn't at present? Big job? Rewiring the entire place necessary?

Depends on the house. This is just a bungalow so I bought 3 point sockets and just banged a hole for the earth through the wall at each socket and ran the wiring outside to an earth spike.

Even if he did run the earth Tel, was there actually an earth to begin with. Chances are that there was no metal to ground at all.

    ^ ^^

I spent 4 years doing an electrical apprenticeship but did not finish it,I spent all my time doing house installs so know the go.

If there is no Earth wire to start of with as in many rural Thai houses it is quite a job to install an earth correctly.

The earth "Green wire" must be retrofitted to every power point in the house and run to every light fitting in the house.

Then the switch board fitted with RCD's." Safe T cut " and an earth spike driven into the ground the complete the refit.

Then the earth wire must be connected in the correct manner and the system tested for a correct Earth.

So in short if one is dealing with a building where no Earth is fitted its quite a big job.

The most important thing is to find someone who actually is a fully qualified tradesman and knows his stuff.

That's the very hard part in Thailand.

Otherwise, could we just run an earth from the fuse box main to a spike (in concrete I guess)? But they each socket would need a wire running to the box, correct? Sorry if remedial - I'm no electrician and happy to get someone to do it - just trying to figure out how big a job that is

EDIT: Okay Terry's answered it - big job

yeah, it's hat simple, no concrete on the spike though.
If you can internal wiring it's cheap enough to hire somebody to run the third wire.
And remember, you only need to run the earth for sockets where you need it.
If the lamps and appliances used only have two pins, no earth required.....

Most asian countries don't worry about an earth, in Laos it's hit n miss when I call a sparky to do the most basic of jobs, they all know just enough to be dangerous, some of these konts create a new problem electrically or 2before they leave. Bought a big fuk off spa about 4 years ago, fantastic it is, I can sitin it when it's hot and pull beer Laos from the mini fridge bolted to the wall , found a farang sparky in Vientiane to wire that sucker up though, wasn't trusting any old somchan to do that particular piece of work, fuk that, oh and they drive like conts to

Doesn't anyone know how to safely knock a person away from such a hazard when it's happening? The tragedy was made worse by a lack of safety knowledge but during the floods a few years ago the idiocy was even more glaring and scary as we had no choice but to wade through chest high water at times and wonder what was going to be knocked into the water that someone had dangling somewhere? Scary stuff to say the least.

I had to go by a corner market a few times and when the water was about 2 feet high and trucks and such driving by making unpredictable wakes, they had an electric soda cooler, teetering on a plastic milk crate with the wakes rocking it back and forth and the extension cord connection they ran just inches above the water. That's the prevailing thinking there so you have to have contingencies.

It's sad for these 2 young men, the whole place is a death trap of one sort or another, whether it's breaking bungie cords or tragedies like this. Just look at the indoor lights installed outside with no grounds and un-insulated, twisted wires with black tape wrapped around hanging from the trees at your local cafe/restaurant. Shame they got electrocuted but also a shame no one within striking distance could figure out how to knock them off the poles in time without having to find someone to shut down the electric first.. Sadly one tragedy followed another.

There are testers on the market that you can buy to test if the House is Earthed correctly.

The testers have three lights on them, one for the red one for the black and one for the Green.

If the property is wired correctly all lights will illuminate. Just plug the tester into a power point.

The red and black will always illuminate, its the green light one is looking at.

If the green is not Illuminating its time to call in a professional and have it sorted.

    Homepro sell them.

    Big problem this earthing Issue.

Particularly dangerous with inside water heaters, many of these unearthed and a death waiting to happen.

The average Thai just don't realize.

They are not much better at flying airplanes to. Which is a bit of a worry as I'm focking of to Korea Monday with Lao airlines, last time i flew them it was a new airbus had a Frenchman steering , I'm taking somtamslaps advise and dropping a few Valium preflight, hate to be. Negative but when you work with Lao folk can see the reality. Maybe I'm turning into the gent?

Top advice about those testers terry, I will look into that next time I'm in home pro, I'm pretty sure though that I will find my houses wiring is shite, I've got a big ole steel sliding gate that I fitted with an autogate opener, fucking brilliant it is for fat konts who don't want together out of the car and open. D gate, 30 000 baht, I'm on my third one now as the gates been struck by lightning twice, after the second one I had a 1m copper rod driven into the ground, and earthed to the fucker, so far so good, but who says lightning doesn't strike twice eh, fuk me, took out the computer and the telly upstairs to,pissed me of that did

In Thailand the Negative carries about 4 volts. Thai electricians like to connect the Negative, on your consumer box, to Earth thinking it'll go away. That is wrong and will lead to getting "zap" when touching anything Earthed.
