    Australian man shot in Philippines

    AAP NOVEMBER 06, 2013 1:48PM
AN Australian man was shot in the Philippines as he tried to defend himself from thieves.

David Toseland was buying a newspaper when two bandits tried to steal his gold necklace on October 26 in Pandacan, a district of the city of Manila, according to the Philippines' Journal Online.

When he resisted, the 63-year-old was shot four times, the news outlet said.

News Corp Australia said Mr Toseland is from the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick and has been flown to Singapore, where he remains in hospital with severe injuries.

Local media say one of the suspects was involved in another non-fatal shooting two days earlier and authorities are now preparing charges against him.

Comment has been sought from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman says it's aware of the case and Australian consular officials are assisting the man and his family.

A MELBOURNE man holidaying in the Philippines was shot four times after standing up to a thief.

Dave Toseland, 63, of Brunswick, has been flown to Singapore, where he remains in hospital with severe injuries.

Mr Toseland, who had been in the Philippines for two weeks on a golfing holiday, was buying a newspaper at a shop in Manila on October 26 when he was confronted by bandits who tried to steal his necklace.

He was shot when he resisted. Friend Michael O'Loughlin said one bullet passed through his arm and into his collarbone, and Mr Toseland also suffered wounds to the stomach and lung.

Local media reported Mr Toseland was shot with a .38 calibre revolver.

Charges were being prepared against the suspected gunman, who reportedly had been a suspect in another non-fatal shooting days earlier.

Mr O'Loughlin said his mate, who goes by the nickname "Bull Bar", was a very tough man.

    "He's a top fellow," Mr O'Loughlin said.

"He's as honest as the day is long. He'd give you the last dollar he had."

Mr O'Loughlin said all who knew Mr Toseland were grateful his condition appeared to have improved since he arrived in Singapore.

Unable to speak in the days after he was shot, Mr Toseland had still managed to communicate his wish to come home.

"Get the f--- out of here," he wrote in a note from his hospital bed.

That's kind of a lower end, blue collar part of Manila. Local news says the shooters were well known as trouble in the area, and had committed a number of robberies. One teenager is already in jail, his partner has been identified and should be sharing the cell shortly. Poor guy was showing gold in the wrong place...hope he makes it.

Sad. Like Thailand (and, I suppose, many other places) these scumbags are willing to kill people over something pretty small. Seen this type of behaviour in Phuket a lot too. Often young scumbags with guns/knives... Hope they get taken off the streets for a very long time.

    Moral of the story:

Do not resist blokes with guns. They wanted a gold necklace FFS, is that really worth more than his life?

A 17 year-old alleged street gangster has been arrested over the shooting of a 65 year-old Melbourne man in Manila.

David Toseland from Brunswick was shot four times as he went to buy a newspaper in the early morning last Saturday.

He was flown to a Singapore hospital with wounds to his arms, stomach and lung where his condition is said to be improving.

Police have taken Ron Ron Orbeta from the Manila suburb of Singalong into custody.

The unemployed youth is also a suspect in another shooting and gun fight, police said.

Police are searching for an alleged accomplice in Mr Toseland’s shooting who has the alias "Pepe".

Mr Toseland had been in the Philippines for two weeks on a golfing holiday.
Definitely picked the wrong country for that.

I had a friend who married a Filipina and henceforth regularly went to Manila. After the first few robberies he took only a $10 watch and a plastic wallet with small change out and about and regularly handed them over.

Another friend settled in the Phillipines, was shot one day whilst out and about, went home and next week was battered to death in his bed by a burglar.

    Can get rough.
