    Thailand sorts out global warming and energy consumption in one go

    Bangkok's ready to turn off lights

    While scientists from all over the world were working to finalise a report on mitigation of global warming in the UN building here, the capital was coming up with its own initiative to reduce the impact of climate change.

    Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) next Wednesday would sign the Bangkok Declaration on Mitigation of Climate Change with 23 public and private organisations at the UN building.

    Anond Snidvongs, a climate change expert at Chulalongkorn University, said Bangkok was a major source of greenhouse gases in the country, as 30-50 per cent of total energy consumption was concentrated in the city.

    Statistics show that last year Bangkok residents devoured 206 million kilowatts of electricity, 34 million litres of oil, 400,000 litres of gasohol and 25,000 kilograms of natural gas.

    Joining with the BMA are the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency.

    After the declaration is signed, a campaign to alert city-dwellers to rising world temperatures around the world will be launched.

    Apirak also called on households to turn off all electrical appliances next Wednesday at 7pm. "We will show Bangkokians how much energy we can save by not consuming electricity for 15 minutes," he said

    The Bangkok Declaration outlines five ways to mitigate global warming - reduce energy and natural resources consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote lifestyles that uphold the sufficiency economy, promote activities that help absorb greenhouse gases and build public awareness of global warming.

    The summit of the Intergovernmetal Panel on Climate Change will end today. Its resolution will be discussed at the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit in New York in two weeks. Bangkok will be among the cities represented.

    ^ Only a fcukwit buys gasohol anyway. Personally I don't fancy having my engine lasting only half it's lifetime.

    turning everything of for 15 minutes does save nothing, or does he really believe they will shut down any power plant for 15 minutes?

    Imagine if we had a moderator that had never been to Thailand before, half the news threads would either be moved to the trash or the jokes section.

    The Bureaucrats just looove these international talkfests, they get to go to places they can't afford, using thousands of gallons of jet fuel doing so. Staying in nice hotels, shagging some tarts and talk about what they would do if only their goverments would give them some money.
    At the end of it all, they say, more talking is needed, so lets have another one very soon in another nice location with good hotels and cheap hookers.

    Apirak urges public to follow 10 energy-reduction steps ahead of 'Savings Day'

    Apirak urges public to follow 10 energy-reduction steps ahead of 'Savings Day'

    Bangkok officials have launched 10 measures to reduce energy use - and designated the ninth day of every month this year as a Fight Global Warming Day.

    Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin talked about ways to reduce global warming and said that 33 organisations - from both government and the private sector - would cooperate on this project today.

    "Savings Day" activities will be held at CentralWorld in the city, and will include a parade and turning off city lights for 15 minutes from 7pm.

    The activities will be broadcast live from five locations - Yaowarat, Khao San Road, Rajdamnoen Avenue, New Phetburi Road and Silom Road - all of which will be dark for a short period.

    City administrators will then compare the power saved from the "lights off" with April 27 - the day that saw the biggest use of power this year.

    Apirak announced 10 ways in which members of the public can reduce energy use and counter global warming:

    1. Changing incandescent lamps to power-saving lights;

    2. Setting air conditioners at 25 degrees Celsius at all times;

    3. Turning off cars and other engines whenever they aren't being used;

    4. Always turn off the power when not using appliances;

    5. Reduce the amount of household garbage;

    6. Start using cloth bags instead of plastic bags;

    7. Use public transport instead of private cars;

    8. Turn off unnecessary lights;

    9. Grow plants;

    10. Use domestic products.

    Apirak said companies, groups or people unable to participate in today's event could get guidelines on how to fight global warming from all 50 district offices.

    The city's campaign to save energy would also include a contest for homes that reduce their use of energy.

    People should just bring their last two monthly electricity bills to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority. Those found to have cut their power use by 10 per cent would be rewarded.
    When asked if the 15 minutes of darkness - when the lights are turned off tonight - would lead to crimes of opportunity, Apirak said it should not be a problem, as only unnecessary lights would be turned off.

    Join BMA's Light Out Campaign at 7pm

    Mitigating world climate change is not beyond the power of individuals. Join hands with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)'s campaign, starting this evening, to turn off non essential lights.

    Governor Apirak Kosayodhin called on Bangkokians to join his campaign to mitigate global warming by switching off lights for 15 minutes from 7pm this evening. He hopes the campaign, coming into effect on the 9th of each month, will help to reduce the city's excessive energy consumption which contributes to the problem of climate change.

    Apirak said he wanted to show Bangkok residents that everyone can contribute to avert global warming.

    Six major business areas - Khao San, Yaowarat, Silom, Ratchadapisek, New Phetchaburi and Ratchaprasong - are expected to fall into relative darkness this evening as store and billboard light are turned off. Individual are also asked to switch off nonessential household lights.

    As the country's capital, Bangkok is a major source of greenhouse gases with 3050 per cent of total energy consumption concentrated in the city. Statistics show that last year Bangkok residents devoured 206 million kilowatts of electricity, 34 million litres of oil, 400,000 litres of gasohol and 25,000 kilograms of natural gas.
    Apirak said switching lights off for 15 minutes in the entire city will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by as much as 4,800 tonnes.

    This is one thing I never understood about Thais!!
    They all love their King.
    The King has been saying for years not to spend so much energy (especially lights in Bangkok).
    The King also said not to spend so much energy for his Birthday/Anniversary and of course commercials.
    When you drive into Bangkok their are millions of lightbulbs celebrating the King.

    Does anyone listen to the King?
    Or do they not understand him?

    If we could stop cows from farting, we could delay global warming and the inexorable rise of the ocean for as much time for me to have a swim in my pool before it becomes sea.
