The political situation in Thailand will be the least of your problems if you plan to settle here.

Unless you are a smart dude and learn about the failures of those who have gone before and avoid the "transfer of wealth" trap they fell into, from which there is no return.

On the other hand, if you have a balanced plan to avoid that, come and enjoy Thailand and don't worry.

By a balanced plan I mean that you and your lady both benefit from.

If you don't have a plan....dont worry...your lady has one.......typically focussed on transferring wealth.

Fuck the Thai military. They've proven themselves to be murderers, kidnappers and against democracy through most of Thailand's history.

    Yup.
Though, military intervention and superseding has become a natural way of life since way way back when....subliminally accepted and understood. And one has to ask themselves why? What entity[ies] within the Thai society and psyche is wholly responsible for the common perpetuation of militarism throughout sectors in which is certainly doesn't belong?

The crazy yellows for a change hadn't crossed my mind on this one.

More like the war on drugs, clearance of the streets in Bangkok last year, if we are to believe that the PM gave the order to 'murder' citizens and of course the purchasing of votes at election time.

Not forgetting of course the odd political figure who gets gunned down in the street.

A very long way to go yet to achieve democracy in Thailand i'm saddened to say

When somebody condemns all politicians in one sweeping statement, it resembles PAD doctrine.

They hope to advance their agenda of diminishing and/or eliminating electoral democracy by demonizing the results.....politicians.

You will never hear them denigrating other elements of the Amart which in fact are the primary stumbling blocks to establishment of Democratic principles.....eventually.

For them, politicians are the sole cause and doing away with them will solve all problems.....and conveniently eliminate what always sidelines them and their ilk...namely elections.

The last election - case in point.

Can't see that Thailand has gotten worse for corruption. Corruption has been here longer than the 20 plus I have been here and I cannot see any change in that in the near future. Graft and murder is 'just business' for politicians here.

As far as China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, are they less violence prone than here? Are they safer for investments? At one time they were nor, but I don't know what current situation is. I was thinking it is lower labor costs that takes business to those countries.

As keen as I am to make my Thai wife happy by settling in Thailand in the near future I am not stupid enough to trust the political situation at the moment. I have only limited experience in Thailand, yes seen through rose colored glasses, what I have seen has been very positive. I have enjoyed many great things in Thailand but as I learn more, especially from people living in LOS, I grow more cautious.

I hope that at sometime in the near future the ordinary people will prevail and allow Thailand to grow up into a real democracy. Not as the Military elite envisage where they are above the law. The Dr. who was run over by ? in Bannkok has that ever been brought to trial? This is the root of what is the down fall df Thailand. That increasingly it is seen as a lawless society by the Thai people themselves.

Democracy doesnt work, it is unfortunatley the best we have come up with to eradicate totalitarians and dictatorships for longer then a lifetime of rule.
Anyone who thinks that democracy is a must, a god given right, or orther sad rhetoric is a bad advertisement for a non civilised intellectual culture.

Just because the majority says yes doesnt mean its best, and democracy fails everytime after elections are run.

All i saw in this election was free gifts for everybody, which is great, im busy playing on my childs free laptop whilst the government is freelancing thier pockets, ego and families.

Im not interested in politics it makes everyone an asshole.
im hot its so hot today.......milk was a bad choice!

I think we all know from Gen. Sawatdiphol that these boys don't much give a shit what Thaksin or the rest of the world thinks, and are most likely eagerly awaiting his return.

    Japan and India.

If you disagree, define "working democracy".

BTW, I remember we had this discussion before.

Some dysfunctional democracies are Japan, SKorea, Singapore and Malaysia.
Some functional military regimes are Burma & Laos
