Swedes abandon Thailand as tourist destination

Swedes abandon Thailand as tourist destination
    Anders Holm Nielsen
    May 30, 2013

The Swedes have given up on Thailand, it seems. The number of trips to what used to be a popular destination has decreased by 25 percent and has slipped from the top-ten list and now comes in at twelfth place.

The past 20 years, Thailand has been a success story when it comes to tourism. In 1992 the Swedes made over 100,000 trips there, and 10 years later in 2002, the number had doubled. 2010 peaked for Sweden-Thailand traveling with 443,000 trips, but in 2011, the number of trips had gone from 430,000 to 323,000 trips.

According to vagabond.se, one reason is probably saturation. Many Swedes have traveled to Thailand for several years and has now become curious about other places, such as the Caribbean and the United States, which travel companies are investing heavily in. Another reason is that Thailand is starting to feel exploited and “normal”, the same fate that befell Mallorca in the 1990’s.

New York has become a popular destination for Swedes, followed by Florida. Interest in the U.S. has increased for several years and has recently been further increased because of the new routes, cheaper fares and perhaps above all a strong crown and thus a cheap dollar, which has made the U.S. into a shopping paradise for the Swedes.

    Cool

And for my part, I would like to extend a personal and warm welcome to all the Swedish ladies (at least while I am here in the U.S.).

Move over London: world's most popular city for 2013 named

Bangkok will become the world’s most popular city for tourists this year, ahead of London, according to new research.
Thailand’s capital, the first point of entry for thousands who head to the country’s beaches, has been named the number one destination for international visitors in 2013's Global Destination Cities Index forecast.
The index predicts visitor numbers based on scheduled flights and the estimated spend by tourists for 132 different destinations around the world.
Bangkok is expected to welcome 15.98 million international arrivals this year, just beating London, which is expecting 15.96 million visitors. London topped the index last year when it officially received 15.5 million international visitors, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The index has been compiled annually by MasterCard since 2010 and this is the first year an Asian city has been named the number one destination.
The other cities predicted to make the top five are Paris, despite an expected drop in visitor numbers this year, Singapore and New York.

Well jeez, I never thought I'd see the day when a joint like Bangkok would top the world for tourist arrivals.

Its always amazed me the number of visitors the UK gets, not because it hasn't got anything to offer, solely because of the price of everything, its a complete rip off.

That's the way to falsify statistics in a meaningless way. Mini nations such as Austria and Switzerland have lots more tourists than Thailand, but are accessible by car, while the dump named Bangkok is only by plane, and it happens to have the only sizable airport of the whole country. Unlike Austria or Switzerland. Never mind that most tourist arrivals on Swampi don't even stay in Bangkok. To put things into perspective, France has 80 million international tourist arrivals per year.

I guess London was top last year because of the Olympics. I doubt very much, that it would achieve the top spot otherwise.

Why Thailand is still so popular, escapes me (except for the obvious). This is the first time in 9 years that we`ve given Thailand and the rest of Asia miss. We decided to visit the states this year instead. Who would have thought, it was cheaper to visit the states, rent a house etc etc than it is to go to our house in Thailand.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong
I`ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along.

I was told years ago by some one "high up" at the Airport that the figures are"masssaged" cos people in transit to another Country on a short stopover are counted as Tourists even though they are only actually in Thailand for a few hours or so before leaving for their onward destination , I met the guy at a wedding here and he spoke excellent English ,as to whether he was on the level I have no way of knowing, but why should he lie?, and the other couple of things he confided in me have since checked out to be true.

^ Maybe London's figures are calculated in the same manner. I have gone up to Heathrow to see friends in transit passing through the airport for a few hours, take them over to Windsor for a pleasant time out,as it is so near the airport.

Thousands of Swedes used to go to Phuket, so it's no surprise they are fed up with the corrupt shithole, is it?

tourists to LOS are becoming more down market barrel scrapers whereas LONDON has a better clientel of upmarket tourist who goes to see more cultural items and spends more than the LOS spitting Chinese tourists and Russian trash .

Well, the Russians have also become the major visitors and investors in top destinations, say Davos, Garmisch, St. Moritz.
