Extra Songkran holiday on April 17

The Cabinet Tuesday agreed to extend the Songkran holiday by a day until April 17.

The Songkran festival this year originally lasts four days, from Friday, April 13, to Monday, April 16.

The Permanent Secretary for the Prime Minister's Office had sought an additional day's holiday on April 17 to accommodate most people's family visits in their hometowns.

The Thai New Year falls on April 13 to 15 every year, and according to a Cabinet resolution made on May 1, 2001, if a yearly holiday falls on the weekend, the next weekday can be made a holiday in lieu.
