PHUKET: Police are appealing for help to confirm the identify of a man carrying a German driving licence who was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a tree north of Phuket.
The man came to Phuket every year alone, according to a spokesperson at the hotel in Phuket City where he usually stays.
He died when his motorcycle crashed into a tree on the main coast road between Phuket and Khao Lak about 2.30pm on Friday, according to police at Thai Muang in Phang Nga, the province north of Phuket.
Rain was falling heavily at the time.
A driving licence contains a name that Phuketwan is not able to publish at this stage of the investigation.
It's not clear whether the help of the German Embassy in Bangkok has been sought. The body of the man, in his 60s, is at Thai Muang community hospital.
A disproportionate number of tourists and expat residents die on the roads in the Phuket region, especially on motorcycles.
No annual figure has been issued for the number of deaths on Phuket in 2012. Statistics for 2011 put the total road toll on Phuket at 119, down on the 135 for 2010.
