Tasting: Bangkok tap water goes international

Bangkok water goes international | Bangkok Post: news

    Bangkok water goes international

"Don't drink the tapwater" is a common refrain, and has helped put a smile on the owners of plastic bottle factories that sell water throughout the country.

But Bangkok's Metropolitan Waterworks Authority is taking aim at critics in a high-profile way this weekend.

The MWA has entered samples of Bangkok water into the oldest, biggest water-tasting competition in the world.

Judges at the 2012 Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting were just as formal as at any wine-tasting.

This weekend's Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, an event taken - by some - as seriously as wine or beer tasting, begins on Thursday in the US spa town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.

Taste aside, the contest may also help to settle an old MWA claim that its water is pure, and any impurities or contaminants are strictly from the pipes and tunnels that deliver it to homes, offices and restaurants.

Tasters in tuxedos and fancy gowns will seriously sip and sample the look, smell and taste of MWA's water, and rate and rank it compared with 100 other samples of water from every US state, as well as Canada, Croatia, Chile, Japan and the K-water Mi-ryang Water Works, of Mi-ryang Lake, South Korea.

In the words of the organisers, "Municipal waters compete for the coveted honor of best tasting tap water at 2:30pm" (2:30am Sunday, Thailand time).

The MWA, wisely no doubt, did not enter the contest's Packaging Design Entries section.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Fuck me sideways you could drink tapwater fifty years ago in the west and these focking idiots haven't managed to make it safe yet. It's a national shame but rather than admit what a failure they are, the BMWA prefer to pretend there is no problem. Arseholes.

As a rule I don't like water so have to add something to make it paletable even if from a bottle.
I am quite happy drinking the water from my taps. Agreed sometimes they over chlorinate but add some fruit juice and...

"Don't drink the tapwater" is a common refrain, and has helped put a smile on the owners of plastic bottle factories that sell water throughout the country.'

I recall years ago that a large sample of water from some unidentified plastic bottle factories was tested here; many results compared unfavourably to those of local tap water with bacteria and pathogens from faulty septic tanks being drawn into cracked water lines.

I further filter my purchased water via a large counter-top 30 liter Swiss water filter.

My tap water is delicious and better than any bottled water I've tried here. But it does go through 16 stages of filtration to the drinking water and 10 to the shower and faucets around the house.
