PHITSANULOK - A student with a history of mental illness allegedly stabbed a teacher yesterday with a 30cm blade, police say.
Banjong Inthuphum, 37, a teacher at Chat Trakan Witthaya School in Chat Trakan district was in a critical condition following the attack, police said.
Mr Banjong's condition has since stabilised and he is expected to survive.
Police said the student had told the teacher he had seen a group of students hanging around behind the school during class.
He offered to help Mr Banjong find the students. They headed off on a motorcycle.
The student was riding pillion and he allegedly stabbed Mr Banjong in the back before fleeing.
With the knife still stuck in his back, the teacher managed to seek help from other teachers and was taken to hospital.
Phattharaphong Inta, 30, an agriculture teacher at the school, said the student had a history of mental illness and had once tried to hurt his own father with a knife. The student had also previously attended drug addiction rehabilitation, the teacher said.
