The monkhood and police both showing themselves to be completely useless. I'm not entirely surprised.

Perhaps the monk could sell them some yaabaa at half cost to make up for it.

Heartily agreed. It wasn't like this 15 years ago.

There weren't any fat monks around then with cell phones and watches and none would even look at women openly.

I also remember cops instantly arresting a tuk-tuk driver for harrassing me and my wife in Bangkok and ordering him to take us straight back home after taking his licence/ID card off him
for which he'd have to pay to get returned.
The cops also told me to only pay the agreed rate and no more if the driver cried poverty over being fined.

Another instance was where I left a map of Bangkok (small value) at a Thai Airways office counter and the receptionist chased after us down the road to make sure we got it back.

Another time I left my room containing a lot of valuable gifts, electonics personal items, books and clothing etc in Bangkok unlocked, and later that day while in Kanchanaburi I phoned the guest house asking them to check and lock it, which they did.

Not an item missing.

Thai people were definitely much more polite, kind, gentle, a lot slimmer and honest than now.

Fair enough, but monks have been and always will be prone to abuse of their power and status.

First post this year. This stuff burns me up! What province did this take place in? The monk should be jailed or at least beaten into a bloody pulp. If you can't get justice, there are no real laws. Would you let your daughter or son be victimized like this with no response? I'd catch the monk one dark night and cut his fucking throat. Screw Thailand and its useless police and judges. They all are criminals. There's something else that came from reading this. The temple is Thailand's solution for reform school or prison much of the time. It's full of young kids and adults who need more help than Buddhism. Every crime monks cause is Thai Buddhism. It really is. They like to blame the individual but too much of this has been happening for far too long; in fact, so much it MUST be approved by Thailand's most powerful leaders and figureheads as they do not speak out or take action to stop it. Shame on Thailand for being so typically selfish and ignorant.

I'd say that some monks are prone to abusing their positions, but not all, even in history, otherwise monkhood wouldn't have survived as an institution.

Wow! What a rave. You're not wrong, either, in pointing the finger at the source of the problems in Thasiland, the leaders, which includes the monks.

I think that it's been getting worse since television and mass communication reached into every home in the land, informing all who previously only knew what went on in their cloistered and isolated hamlets and villages what in fact was going on in more corrupt, affluent and influential areas.

Couple to that the examples set on Thai TV etc by the new generation of role models, Bangkok girl and all that along with new breed macho man Thai and nearly everyone is now after the glittering lifestyles and bling of the media images, no one in the least aware that they are only illusions and unattainable.

No wonder there are so many screwed up desperate people. They think that they are entitled to manifestation of those images pumped into their brains, simply because the illusions exist!

^ That's the other end of the "entitlement" philosophy, where self-perceived under-privileged offspring of perceived more affluent parents (look at the royal households or any inheritance ridden structure) expect to be supported as of right.

It's a kind of crazy circle as described by Fritz Perls of Esalen Institute California. in his book, "Games people play" where person A is a have not who feels justified in taking from B who has,
as in "I'm not OK, you're OK, you owe me."
Or
Person A is in an OK position who sees B as not OK, so feels entitled to change B's situation, the interfering missionary at best, the murderer at worst.

Worst case scenario is where "I'm not OK you're not OK",...the depressed position of a nihilist.
as opposed to "I'm OK, you're OK", an egalitarian social contract where tolerant symbiosis exists.
