Chatchawan Jindapraglai, a student at Pathum Thani Technology School (P-Tech), was shot nine times near a bus stop as he tried to flee from a group of students from rival Pathum Thani Technology College (PTTC).
Police said they used images provided by a security camera near the crime scene to identify all five suspects as 16- to 18-year-old PTTC first and second year students.
A home-made shotgun, two machetes, and two motorbikes used to commit the crime were seized as evidence, police said.
The alleged shooter said that the victim and his friend provoked the shooting by challenging them to fight, so he used the gun, given to him by a friend who had previously graduated from the college, to shoot Chatchawan.
Police have urged the two educational institutions to enforce strict regulations regarding students' possession of weapons and have set up security checkpoints along routes used by students to travel to and from school.
All suspects were charged with conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of weapons and will be sent to a juvenile prison.
Three more suspects remain at large.

PATHUM THANI - A 17-year-old Pathum Thani Technology School (P-Tech) student was murdered on Tuesday after his motorcycle broke down in front of a bus stop full of students from the rival Pathum Thani Technology College (PTTC).
There is fierce rivalry between P-Tech and PTTC, with students from both colleges constantly involved in brawls and gunfights, a report said.
The victim's friend, 18, said both of them were on a motorbike heading to college. The bike broke down and soon afterwards PTTC students waiting for a bus nearby came at them with knives and guns in hand.
His friend was then shot as they were trying to escape. A taxi drove by and honked at the students causing them to flee the scene, he said.
The taxi driver rushed the wounded teen to a nearby hospital, where he died soon after, according to police.
Police said they have already identified all of the students involved and will track them down. They have also advised parents of these students to turn their children in.
The body of the 17-year-old will undergo further medical examination to determine the exact cause of death, police added.
