PHUKET: A large crowd is expected to attend a meeting in the Phuket district of Bang Tao today amid growing concerns about the scale of Russian businesses on Phuket.

Banners were strung up at the weekend all around Bang Tao, considered one of Phuket's five-star areas, urging people to reject Russian businesses, but support Russian tourism.

The Bang Tao meeting follows similar concerns further south in the Karon beach region of Phuket where raids on Russian-run massage parlors closed shops for failing to abide by Thai laws.

Residents in Bang Tao are said to be incensed by one particular case in which a fast-driving Russian was fined 2000 baht and ordered to pay 5000 baht in compensation to a victim struck by a vehicle.

Senior Phuket Provincial Hall administrators are likely to be on the spot at 1pm today to urge a calm response when the crowd gathers at the Bang Tao Beach Resor

I feel some sympathy towards the Thais here. They're being denied the one thing they're good at i.e providing a service to tourists by Ruskies who make no attempt to learn the language or understand their culture but who've set up businesses probably on tourist visas. Wouldn't you be pissed off if this happened in your country?

I like th Russians and have nothing against them personally...but they come from a society where it was always a good thing to skirt the system and see how many rules you can get away wih bending. You had to think that way to survive under communism and even now that is how they think. So the Thais invite them not realizing that the Russians are just as good as the Thais (if not better) at skirting the system. Of course the Russians are going to set up shop. Of course the Russian tourists want to save a buck by using the russian businesses and if course the Russian businesses want to make a buck. The Thais were ripping people off for years. It was ok when it was the Brits, yanks and ozzies because they put up with it. (The worst that would happen is to gumble and complain but not take action). The Russians won't just take it and are serious competition for the Thais, and can seriously out do the Thais when it comes to underhanded business tactics. And it was the Thais that invited them to come over and play. Thailand should have stuck to uk, us, and oz tourists... Much easier to rip off.

Reading stories like this I cant believe the Thais heads wont explode when this comes to pass over the next few years.
    ASEAN Economic Community

In short, the AEC will transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, and freer flow of capital.

What is "we're all doomed" in Thai?

    as for;

Wait for a radical clamp down on visa rules for Russians in the coming months..
it will be one for all and all for one - we'll all get hammered because these pricks do not realise they are in Thailand and not Russia.

Will be interesting to see what happens a few years from now when the Chinese tourists become more visible than the Russians. Chinese tourist arrivals already trump the Russians (any all others too), but are still by and large either at the top end of the market or the bottom. Once the middle market starts filling up with the Chinese (the bulk of the market and opportunity and where most rip-offs happen) the Chinese will start investing too. So it will be interesting to see the reaction of the Chinese-Thai when their cousins start setting up biz here like the Russians are doing now and like the farangs have been doing for some 20 odd years.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

Quite so , The Thai's will obviously look at any foreigner setting up a business here in direct competition , especially if they undercut them as "outside interference" ,which I believe is the reason for this thread

i have made almost a quarter of a million baht from russians since end november renting my house.

one group have already paid a 50% deposit to rent it again from end november until mid february next year.

granted, these are more off the beaten path types, professionals who work online and not package tourists, they would not be caught dead on phuket.

personally, i avoid phuket and pats, and dont mind most russians at all

Just another Phuket or Pattaya story innit.

Russians are taking over SE Asia, from Vietnam to Cambodia and Thailand

they are not your typical pussy whipped Europeans, and Asians have become complacent with the weak attitude of Europeans

Vietnamese are complaining and there is nothing they can do, Russians are winning there and will win here in Thailand

That's why there are so many Russian bondage vids out there. They women can indeed be drop-dead gorgeous. But a ball gag is needed just to get through the shoot to shut up the depressing shite that rolls out of their mouths

    fallout from Bang Tao protests

Crackdown begins on illegal foreigners in Phuket
    Friday 1 February 2013

PHUKET: Twelve foreigners, including people from Australia, Finland, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the UK, were arrested yesterday (January 31) for working illegally in the island’s tourism industry, police said.

Their arrests came as Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, announced an investigation into tour agencies, massage parlous and restaurants, as well as other businesses which are foreign owned or employ many foreign staff. This was prompted by a protest on Monday in Bang Tao by Thai businesspeople, who said illegal foreign businesses were undercutting the market.

The Department of Labour, in conjunction with Phuket Immigration and the Phuket Police, started checking companies yesterday (January 31) based on random checks or tip-offs from the public.

The main focus will be on businesses that are foreign owned or operated, but Thai businesses that employ large numbers of foreigners will also be checked.

Beginning the crackdown, 12 foreigners were arrested yesterday for either not having a work permit, or doing a different job to what their work permit states.

Many were working in the tour industry as tour guides, taxi drivers or masseurs, police said. Their cases have been referred to the Phuket Provincial Court.

“I understand that foreigners want to work in Phuket, but they have to work correctly,” Maj Gen Choti told The Phuket News.

Mr Choti said the officials were also checking Thai shareholders in foreign-run companies. Thai people listed as shareholders might need to show they genuinely had enough money to have been able to have invested in the company.

“The Bang Tao mob were very angry, and it is their right to be angry,” Maj Gen Choti said.

“Russians coming to travel is fine, but if they take Thai people’s careers and livelihoods by working illegally, that is not fair to the Thai people.

“Foreigners who live and work here have to show us their work permit if we do a check. If they have the correct permit, it is not a problem.”

Alex Tours Decides to Stay Shut, Says Phuket Protest Leader
    By Nuttaporn Thongsri
    Thursday, January 31, 2013

PHUKET: The Russian owner of Alex Tours - focus of a protest by residents of the Bang Tao district of Phuket - does not plan to reopen the business, the Mayor of Cherng Talay, Ma-Ann Samran, said today.

He said local agitators now aimed to concentrate on whether Russian staff at nearby restaurants had permission to work in Thailand.
