'We were cheated,' say Dutch-Thai family in Phuket

PHUKET: Thai customs officials say they'll examine the case of a visiting Dutch-Thai family in Phuket, who say a travel company in Bangkok scammed them out more than B200,000.

The family say the Bangkok firm charged the money for five return plane tickets between the Netherlands and Phuket, and for a hotel booking in Phuket for the five members of their family, amounting to around B240,000.

But the travel company never sent the tickets or booked the hotel, and has since refused all attempts to contact them, they say.

After buying new tickets, the family have arrived in Phuket with only B50,000 left between them.

On Friday, the family - Peter Neberd and his wife Jiraporn Pajobchan, their son, and Mr Peter’s parents - visited Phuket's tour guide registration office to get help with a claim against the travel company.

Mr Prapan Kanpraseng, head of the custom department in Phuket, said he would he present the case to Phuket's Governor, Maitree Intusut.

He called on the company involved to respond to the case, which might otherwise damage Phuket's reputation with foreign tourists, he said.

What's going on here?
By the look of it the tickets were booked from Holland? with a Thai travel agent? Return tickets so they plan to go back.
Why would they arrive with only 50,000 if they intend to go back?

Why would you buy a ticket issued in Thailand at a much higher cost if you live in the Netherlands/ I agree with Koojo, something smells fishy. Buy a round trip ticket from the Netherlands to Phuket from an agent in Bangkok? How did they get on the plane in the first place? Where did the air tickets come from?

Maybe the reporting wasn't accurate. It seems that the flights got them there but there's no accommodation. 3 rooms at 6K per room per night for 14 nights works out at 252K baht. The missing 240K ?

Return tickets + accommodation = B240 000.00

2] But the travel company never sent the tickets or booked the hotel.

It sounds like the family had a sum of money (about B500 000.00?) available. After the 2nd purchase of tickets, the amount available (the remaining funds) was about B50 000.00.

Why would Thai Customs be involved in this - surely it is a matter for police. The whole story is fishy...
