Popular Swedish tourist paradise in Thailand burned down

    02 January 2013 | news Newsdesk

At midnight new years eve the beach at Mae Phim village in Rayong east Thailand was turned into a inferno of fire. The culprit was a rocket which ignited a thatched roof of Joe Joe restaurant and minutes after the whole lane of restaurants was on fire.

“We stood and waited for the stroke of midnight on the beach when a rocket was triggered too early. We first heard an explosion, then we a rocket flying in the wrong direction and set fire to the roof of one of the beach restaurants, Rober Hallgren from Vësterås told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

The fire spread in minutes and chaos erupted at the beach crowded with tourist many of them Swedish.

“People screamed and ran in all directions. It was really uncomfortable”, said Robert Hallgren.

Carl Mellerot, who has lived in Mae Phim for eight years and runs a restaurant on the beach, tells that 30 restaurants are situated like pearls on a string at the beach.

“No one has been injured. The restaurants all have thatched roofs, but open sides, making it fast and easy to get out and away,” he tells

Carl Mellerot describes Mae Phim as a small Swedish village where 80 percent of western tourists are Swedish.”

According to The Government Public Relations Department (PRD) more than 10 shops and restaurants and an ATM burned down to the ground. More than 15 fire-department vehicles participated in fighting the fire, which was difficult and dangerous because all restaurants had gas cylinders for cooking in their kitchens.

PRD estimates the damages to 10 million baht.

I recall an evening in Koh Samed where we were dining in a beachside restaurant. We enjoyed a slightly elevated position and could view the various groups drinking on the beach most of whom were armed with rockets which they then ignited after placing them in a variety of bottles or, in some cases, just stuck lightly into the sand.

It was quite alarming to watch and distinctly uncomfortable when the trajectory of the missiles came worryingly close to us and the other diners. The owner, a Brit married to a Thai and reasonably fluent in the language, hurtled down to the morons on the beach and told them in no uncertain terms to fuck off and stop trying to kill his customers. He was quite beside himself with rage and we spoke afterwards in the bar. Seems no amount of previous accidents has altered the habit the Thai have in playing with fireworks when they are having fun. The local co-operative had had numerous meetings about it and tried to curtail the practice adjacent to the restaurants but no one could prevent the sale of the fireworks which was quite lucrative to several who consequently made a killing. He was clearly exasperated by it and we had a few drinks together but as in almost every instance when one ponders the stupidity of the Thai talk soon ended in the inevitable " what can you do, they're just fucking idiots ".

This conflagration will not alter anything and the same silly fuckers will be back down the beach indulging in their pyrotechnical mayhem on Songkran.

    True.

But with each regulation and restriction called for Thailand will move closer to the straight jacket societies so many flee, or want to flee from.

Each call and cause sounds good in isolation.

I'm not suggesting you are calling for regulation. But many will.

The only regulation I would call for would be compulsory sterilisation of all those whose IQ is lower than say 100.

the idiocy on general display in this country is quite astounding and there is no point in legislating against fireworks or anything else because legislation is never properly publicised is never enforced

555 many posts stating reality out here! Pity the westerners who had invested much in their restaurants and bars. Thais are easy come easy go and if you can muster a couple of platic chairs and a few tables you are in business with not much to loose. Time to downsize!

Having said all of that, I well remember the story of a German who had built a killer of a bar complex on the main beach on Koh Lanta and just as he was ready to open the locals burnt it to the ground -too much competition for them!

    Did the locals revolt?

Fair comment, but it was so panicked it managed to jump over the railings.
