Police in Bali are investigating the looting of three ATMs at a shopping center in Denpasar that resulted in hundreds of millions of rupiah being stolen.
The machines were located at the ATM vestibule at the Tiara Gatsu shopping mall on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Adj. Comr. Artha Ariawan, the Badung district police crime unit chief said on Sunday.
Artha said police suspected that the burglars had help from someone inside the mall, citing the fact that the crime occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the three security guards who were supposed to be guarding the premises were asleep.
“It’s quite suspicious how all three [security guards] were asleep at the same time. We’re still investigating this,” the officer said.
Another suspicious finding, he said, was the fact that not all the surveillance cameras in the building were working at the time.
The burglars first shut off the building’s electricity supply before using a blowtorch to break into the ATMs belonging to BCA, BRI and Bank Permata, Ariawan said.
