Thailand is not even close to the poorest in the world.

Sex just isn't as big of deal in Thai culture son. They don't carry it around like the ultimate bargaining chip like western women do. Child support, alimony, rape and sexism accusations. Sex just carries more leverage in the west.

If it was all about the economy then why isn't there go gos all over eastern Europe and Africa ?

Hugely embarrassing story for TaoT. Partly cos the Thai people involved just don't seem see the crime/shame in it. Sex is not a big deal here. It is not used by the church or state as a means of control as it is done in the west.

As Dan has already commented, it is impossible to extrapolate anything from this case in a meaningful way to provide an accurate insight into Thai society as a whole. The woman selling her own daughter for gain is no more proof that the lumpen Thai are inveterate human traffickers as a class than say a British lower end oik smashing his girlfriend's baby against a wall is typical behaviour of the untermensch there.

One simply hasn't enough information to gauge a trend from this report nor can it be sufficient to speculate upon a methodology of the dysfunction of Thai society.
Folk really should refrain from using what they perceive as smoking gun evidence supporting their interpretation of the Thai alleged immorality which is little more than sanctimonious bluster bolstering their propensity for armchair rhetoric founded on ignorance and bigotry.

What is evident is the likelihood that the child will almost certainly be damaged goods probably as much as her mother was or is.

To a certain extent, we are all victims but the only crime is thinking any of us are immune from the human condition.
