Bangkok may not be hard hit by Gaemi | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

Bangkok may not be hard hit by Gaemi

The capital city may not be hard hit by rain as earlier expected since tropical storm Gaemi has been downgraded to a depression while passing overr Cambodia and will become a low pressure wedge on entering the country over Sa Kaeo province on Sunday night, Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said.

MR Sukhumbhand said because of this, there might not be much rain in Bangkok in the next one or two days.

However, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration would continue to watch the situation and remain on full alert.

"The city people can lead a normal life. They will be immediately informed if there is any change," he said.

Sanya Chinimit, director of the Drainage and Sewerage Department, said the BMA has drained water out of its canals in preparing to take rainwater.

Satellite photos showed that as of 1.20pm Gaemi was moving in the direction of the Gulf of Thailand. Therefore, it was believed Bangkok might not be directly affected by the storm.

However, the situation would continue to be under a close watch, he said.

In another development, Wasant Meewon, the BMA spokesman, said about 100 sandbags which were found in the drain along Srinakharin road were in fact belonged to the Drainage and Sewerage Department of the BMA, not of any other agency.

They were laid there to prevent water from Khlong Hua Mak from flowing onto Srinakharin road so that the water which inundated the road could be pumped into Khlong Kracha more quickly.

Therefore, the sandbags should not be removed, Mr Wasant said.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

    Thailand braced for flooding

Tropical Storm Gaemi is expected to test the country's flood defences as heads in from the west.

After deluging parts of Vietnam, Tropical Storm Gaemi is now heading across Laos and Thailand, bringing the risk of flooding.

After several days meandering around the South China Sea, Gaemi finally picked up pace and arrived across central Vietnam during Saturday. The former imperial capital of Hue recorded 128mm of rain in 24 hours.

Authorities in Thailand are bracing themselves for Gaemi’s arrival and it is likely that central and southern parts of the country could see as much as 200mm of rain in the next two to three days.

Authorities in the Thai capital of Bangkok are taking every possible precaution to ensure Gaemi’s impact is kept to a minimum.

There is obviously much anxiety about any possible flooding risk after the devastating monsoon season of 2011. Some 13.6 million people were affected by flooding which left 815 people dead and caused more than $45 billion in damage and lost economic output.

To that end, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has set up 10 operation centres to co-ordinate their response. There are hundreds of water pumps and ‘water-pushing’ machines available and sluice-gates have been left partially open.

Government websites and telephone lines will also be available to keep people up-to-date with any flooding issues.

Well I have been waiting since Friday and have not seen rain other than a sprinkle. I dont see how a tropical storm created over the pacific ocean can intensify once it hits land.

Why havent we been tracking tropical storms for the last 20 years here? Because they rarely cause much damage. Monsoon season is a reality. Before it was life giving, but because we continue to fcuk with nature the flooding becomes more and more pronounced. Last year was an anomaly that I dont think will be repeated. But anymore heavy rain here in BKK and natural flood areas are going to flood. Which is most of the CBD. But for hours and perhaps a day or two, not like the prolonged homelessness of last year.

I cheered when Gaemi started to take a somewhat more southern track - we really really need some rain here in Samui.
What a fekkin joke of Tropical Storm, the drought will continue here, we'll get nothing.
