Indeed. While working in Sudan, I had on occasion to take a bus from the Red Sea to Khartoum. As I boarded one bus I thought good as it was obviously imported from Europe, from the metal plate attached to the bulkhead. As we proceeded on our long hot journey, dodging camels and donkeys meandering on the main and only highway, the bus was shaking or trembling more and more. I decided to dismount at the next wayside 'tea stand' shrouded in an ever occurring haboob (sand storm). As the bus departed I could detect the rear axle following well off-center to the front: apparently Sudan and other countries trying to save currency habitually buy up wrecked buses and refit (or not).

An NGO group kindly gave me a lift. Mind you not all NGOs are as benevolent; I was initially passed up by a 'single white female' driving one of our UN-funded vehicles. But of course a lone female venturing out alone can't be too careful; then, again it was a given, that khawaja including those wearing UN armbands were always to be assisted by fellow aid workers in the hinterlands.
I met her a week lateron a scheduled trip to her 'humanitarian' organization to audit its compliance with UN-funding criteria. I said nothing - I didn't have to, as she skilfully faded into the background. Oh yes...the NGO did pass their audit.
Moral: beware Sudanese buses at least, and haughty 'single white female' with their false sense of the currency of camel-toes.

I would have thought china would have the honour , though most international tourists in china would use the airlines and very few would be on the overloaded intercity busssssesssss in the mountains - also the highways have improved dramatically in the last 5-10 years

intercity bus travel in Madagascar is mainly via "taxi brousse " ( a minibus of varying vintage packed full of people and loaded on the roof to a height of 4 metres )

note the road marking and cnut's eyes for safety whilst night driving
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

    true.
I'm starting to agree with you, it's getting more and more difficult to see the bright side of this place. That many people dead and injured because of 1 stubborn and stupid monkey is hard to accept. Glad he died too, it would be worse seeing him get off and go free on that blown tire nonsense
The childish bastard probably drove worse after the confrontation deliberately to assert his "authority".
