UAE? Vietnam? Bali? You would think that even if people are desperate and stupid enough to mule drugs, they would select destinations without the harshest penalties around. Fuck, mule it into the UK and have your Paki cousins at Immigration and Customs wave you through. On the slim chance you get caught, claim the Taliban forced you, claim asylum, and bingo - on the dole, free everything - set for life.

Lazy police work to shoot the messenger. She deserved punishment, but better to offer her a deal and use her info to try and catch some real criminals. Then again, i doubt Vietnam has the resources to go after them anyway.

Sad casualty of the failed war on drugs. Likely she was coerced/set up or a victim of some turf war.
Executing her will only serve the powers at be, make them out to be effective leaders.

^^Not really, If these policemen were not lazy, did the deal and burst into the room with the king pin... they would probably find their bosses boss. which could be career limiting at best if not fatal.

^Very Sad in deed, she deserves to be punished, but death does not fit the crime here and is obviously not much of a deterrent.

Thai student among death row inmates in Vietnam

Embassy holds out little hope of reprieveHANOI : A Thai diplomat in Vietnam has warned Thais not to attempt to smuggle drugs into the communist nation as traffickers face execution if they are caught.

Preeyanooch Phuttharaksa, immediately after her death sentence was passed by a court in Ho Chi Minh City, and her old photo from MySpace. (Main photo from Sports & Culture newspaper, Hanoi)

Charge d'affaires Boonrong Pongstiensak said Vietnam's anti-drug laws are among the world's harshest, and that many foreign prisoners are currently on death row in Vietnam, mostly on drug trafficking convictions.

"Even Vietnamese drug convicts face execution," he said.

Mr Boonrong told the Bangkok Post that the Thai embassy in Vietnam is working to help Preeyanooch Phuttharaksa, 23, a Thai college student from Bangkok who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking by Ho Chi Minh City court in June this year.

Preeyanooch was arrested for trafficking three kilogrammes of methamphetamine pills from Nigeria's Benin city into Vietnam through Saigon airport last October.

She was arrested after the drugs were found in a false bottom of her suitcase.

Police at Ho Chi Minh airport took this photo of Preeyanooch the day she was arrested last October for smuggling 3kg of drugs.

She told the court she was paid about US$1,570 (about 50,000 baht) by a Nigerian trafficking ring to smuggle the drugs.

Mr Boonrong said Preeyanooch had appealed for a reduced sentence on the advice of the Thai embassy in Vietnam.

He said the embassy was waiting for the Vietnamese president's decision on whether to reduce her death sentence to life imprisonment.

But Mr Boonrong said a reduced sentence would be difficult to obtain as drug trafficking is considered a most serious offence in Vietnam.

Mr Boonrong said four other Thais arrested for drugs trafficking are now being detained in prisons in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

They are awaiting trial, having been charged with smuggling methamphetamine pills into Vietnam.

Mr Boonrong did not give further details about these four suspects. He said the embassy in Hanoi is waiting for a response to a letter it sent to Vietnamese authorities asking them to allow Thai officials to visit the suspects.

He said visiting Thai inmates in Vietnam was difficult as it took a long time to obtain the necessary permission.

Mr Boonrong said he had received information that many Thai women are being deceived into trafficking drugs by international drugs gangs.

Permpong Chavalit, deputy secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said the Foreign Ministry recently reported that about 100 Thai women are currently being detained for drug trafficking in several countries, including China, India, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Brazil and South Africa.

Some of them had married citizens of African countries and were forced to become involved in the trans-national drug trade, while others were willing to act as drug couriers due to the high pay, he said.

He said African drug syndicates are using Thailand as their base, and that African gangsters used different tactics to dupe Thai women into the drug trade.

Mr Permpong warned Thai women to stay away from African men to save themselves from being tricked into becoming a part of the drug networks.

Once she's spent time slimming back down on prison rations, I think you won't be the only one!

All joking aside, I wonder if the Thais will see the irony of the situation when viewed through the prism of their own international inmate prison population for the very same offence?

Strict as Thailand may be on drug crimes, they usually spare the death penalty to anyone that confesses. The death penalty for persons in the drug business is ironic when the tobacco and liquor producers are considered respectable businesses, yet they do more harm in both Vietnam and Thailand than illegal untaxed drugs.

She's obviously no hardened mamasan drug courier , i think in a case like this the Viet's should look at going after the Nigerians lets face it !! they were to be delivered to somebody of an African nature in Saigon most likely , a bit of investigation with their Thai and Khmer counterparts would very well bring fruitation and lock a few of the real criminals up ..
If she co-operates with the Viets fully , then her sentence should be commuted to life ...Simples..

But it would mean stepping on somebody if not a few peoples feet in law enforcement in all three countries that i have mentioned , so that is not likely to happen at all ....
But what ever way you look at it , she's just a stupid kid who is in no way a hardened Criminal ...
    Travel lightly ....

Vietnam court upholds death sentance against Thai girl
    Thursday, October 04, 2012

Preeyanooch Phuttharaksa, a 23-year-old Thai student, had her death sentence upheld at an appeals court in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday. The woman was convicted of trafficking drugs into Vietnam

An appeals court in Ho Chi Minh City Wednesday upheld a death sentence against a 23-year-old Thai student who was convicted of trafficking drugs into Vietnam in June.

At a hearing held by the People’s Supreme Court in HCMC, the board of judges said they turned down Preeyanooch Phuttharaksa’s appeal for a sentence reduction because she had transported a huge amount of drugs into Vietnam, which was an “extremely serious” act.

The woman, a university student in Bangkok, was caught with more than three kilograms of methamphetamine when she arrived at HCMC's Tan Son Nhat International Airport on October 29 last year.

She was transporting the drugs for a person of unknown identity and referred to as Jom from Doha, Qatar, to Vietnam for 50,000 baht (US$1,600). The drugs were given to Phuttharaksa in Benin, before she flew to Morocco’s Casablanca city, and then Doha.

According to the student, she also transported drugs for Jom on two different occasions in February and March that same year, for 4,000 baht ($130) and $300, respectively.
