Thailand’s topless talent show shock: Are some breasts more equal than others?

By Siam Voices Jun 19, 2012 12:17AM UTC

    By Kaewmala
It’s bound to happen again – and again. That is, yet another scandal exposing tender feminine flesh and Thailand’s uneasy relationship with female breasts. Why, for all its peculiar mammophobia (the correct term is mastrophobia by the way), Thailand just can’t get enough of breasts, especially the bare kind. It’s an untreated national psychosis.

    Bare-breast painting

This time the Thai fear (or fixation) of female breasts was stirred by a Thailand’s Got Talent contestant, who stripped and painted with her bare breasts on national television. She definitely shocked the audience and got the lone female judge quite upset.

Given the studio audience’s reactions – a mixture of gasps, laughs, smiles and cheers – it was clear the audience was more delighted than not. The two male judges let the contestant go on to the next round, while the female judge was aghast, outraged and walked off the stage :

Personally, this bare-boob painting neither tickles my artistic sensory response nor offends me. But who am I to judge? Is it talent? Is it art? Is it a cheap, surefire way to get noticed? I’m not quite sure what to make of it. As it happens it triggered quite passionate reactions among the conservative Thai public (and many chuckles in the not-so-conservative quarters).

Swiftly and unfailingly the Ministry of Culture (abbreviated here as ThaiMiniCult) came out to express its customary outrage. Culture Minister Ms. Sukumol Khunploem said:
There must be limits on artistic expression. I was shocked when I saw the clip. The ministry will meet the organisers of Thailand’s Got Talent to get an explanation.
Since the show was pre-recorded, the “inappropriate” content should have been edited out, she added.

Then there’s the famous Ms. Rabiabrat Pongpanich, a staunch defender of Thai family values and self-appointed Thai culture watchdog, who growled for the Bangkok Post:
Thai society does not accept this. The police will consider whether this is obscene. This also shows that Thai society is ailing and it’s becoming a sex-consuming society.
Their reactions are all very predictable really. We’ve heard all this before from both ThaiMiniCult and Ms. Rabiabrat, whom I myself have honored as one of the leading Thai culturalists (afflicted by a grand delusion of Thai CULTure with accompanying symptoms of historical mammary amnesia. See more here.)

    Art or obscenity?

What is art is highly subjective, especially when it comes to abstract painting. For instance, which is art to you, among all these silly abstract paintings? I reckon what’s identified as art in this case would be different from one person to the next.

And what’s a paintbrush as an artistic tool as opposed to limbs, boobs or trunks?

Upon further reflection the bare-boob painting reminds me of Thai elephant paintings, though admittedly the comparison might have worked better if the artist had used her nose instead of her breasts as the painting tool, but then that wouldn’t have been so interesting, would it?

Come to think of it, are elephant-trunk paintings art? Would anyone – human or elephant – complain that this “Foxy Lady” painting is obscene?

    The judge vs. the artist

In any case, what’s interesting here isn’t whether or not bare-breast painting is art, or how much talent there is in the artist. What interests me is the female judge, who to me is a stunningly beautiful woman, even when she cringes. But more than her beauty, I was captivated by her reactions.

The judge Pornchita Na Songkhla, who is a highly versatile talent herself (multiple award-winning actress, model, singer, presenter, spokesperson, cultural ambassador, talk show host, etc. – see her Wikipedia page) delivered her verdict in a style befitting a judge on Thailand’s top talent show. Benz (her nickname) told the bare-breast artist after she completed her painting performance
I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s inappropriate in Thai culture. Benz does not support this sort of thing.

    The judge vs. the artist

Judge Benz’s hauteur was impressive, but the contestant took it admirably well, with a nice smile as you can see.

But Judge Benz didn’t stop there. After her fellow male judges gave the contestant a green light to go on to the next round, both agreeing the performance was art, she cried, “Are you serious?,” maintaining her impressive judgely hauteur. Then after a few more expressions of incredulity, she swung her axe with a no less impressive theatrical flare:
Incidentally I’m not artistic. So no go from me!
    And some more:
    I really don’t get it! I don’t get it! I don’t like it!
And then she . Boy, did I enjoy her theatrics!

    The master vs. the apprentice

Judge Benz’s outrage was delicious. Almost as delicious as (what looked like) a chocolate-covered body of hers – beautifully, artistically photographed less than two years ago. No wonder she was outraged! (Look at the bare-breast artist on the right. What a haphazard, unpolished way to make art with a woman’s body, Benz must have thought. Not to mention one can’t eat paint!)

Judge Benz in IMAGE Magazine in 2010 vs. The bare-breast painting contestant in 2012

It must have been painful for Benz to watch the girl’s inexperienced attempt at sauciness. For this Benz has my sympathy. The aspiring artist definitely could learn from the master like Benz. I am inclined to think that Benz must have just used MiniCult’s “inappropriate in Thai culture” reason as an excuse to cover the fact that she couldn’t bear watching such ineptness in an amateur. It would explain why she was so angry.

I imagine, while Benz was wincing, several glorious images of herself were passing through her mind. If she was so inclined, she might have snapped at the contestant, “Watch and learn, girl!”

That’s how a woman should pose covered up with sticky stuff on her skin... Not like that!

Inanimate canvases are so passé. Look at possible alternatives, you little noob!

And if you have to wear clothes, wear them in style!.. Shed that carpenter shirt. No, no, not here! Keep it on!

It’s undeniable, the skills of the apprentice are light years away from those of the master. There is absolutely no doubt that there is much Judge Benz could teach the bare-breast painter, if she would ever be inclined to accept an apprentice. (Get more glimpses of Judge Benz’s masterly skills here.)

Just one small question clings to my mind though: How the talented Judge Benz would explain to the Ministry of Culture (which once employed her as its spokesperson) how the bare-breast painting on her show was inappropriate in Thai culture, and how her modeling for the IMAGE Magazine in 2010 was not.

Would her explanation be “some breasts are more artistically equal than others”?

    UPDATE: (1:50pm 19 June 2012) …

This bare-breast painting show has got a huge buzz not only in Thailand but also internationally. There has supposedly been so much outrage that the Thailand’s Got Talent’s producer came out to apologize to the Thai public. I bet the TGT people were counting on morally hyper-sensitive Thais’ reactions to garner domestic and international headlines. (There are even suggestions that the bare-breast painter was hired to go on the show. If that’s true, the show would pretty much have been staged, possibly even Judge Benz’s outrage. The staging is entirely plausible given the nature of Got Talent shows in other countries.)

Credit goes to the crafty TGT producer Work Point or whoever in TGT that approved the bare-breast painter to go on the show. The stunt, if it was a stunt, has certainly worked. Even realizing this, I still can’t resist. TGT has certainly given much for the public to discuss. Thailand does need more discussion on sexuality and could loosen up a lot, especially concerning the female sex.

This morning, a Twitter friend shared a YouTube video of another topless TGT contestant from last year, a young man who showed a lot more than bare breasts. See Judge Benz’s reactions to the male contestant’s nudity.

The gender reversal of the contestant and the reversed reactions of the one female and two male judges give some food for thought. Staged or not, it’d appear that not all Thai breasts are equal, and some breasts are viewed and treated as artistically more equal than others, depending on gender, timing, and perhaps whether the show needs a scandal to boost its ratings. And when it comes to outrage, women can be counted on to bear the brunt and show expected contempt for “culturally inappropriate” display of bare breasts.

Contestant Duangjai Jansaunoi, 23, takes part in the 'Thailand's Got Talent' TV show in Bangkok, Thailand on June 17, 2012.

Thailand's Ministry of Culture is investigating whether a TV talent show broke censorship laws after one of its contestants painted a canvas with her breasts, The European Pressphoto Agency reports.

Duangjai Jansaunoi, 23, drew a yellow outline of a man on a canvas, stripped off her shirt, poured paint over her breasts and proceeded to fill in the picture.

Two out of the three judges on 'Thailand's Got Talent', both of them men, voted in favour of Duangjai moving on to the second round of the competition.

Summoning the show's producers to explain themselves, Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome said Monday that the incident was "very shocking".

Contestant's topless painting 'paid PR stunt' | Bangkok Post: news

Contestant's topless painting 'paid PR stunt'

The topless painting act performed by a female contestant during a talent show broadcast on national television on Sunday was a prearranged, paid-for stunt to draw attention to the show, according to the contestant's friend.

The woman, whose name was withheld, said on Tuesday that she was a close friend of the 23-year-old contestant, Duangjai "Pond" Jansaunoi, according to a report on the Thai Rath newspaper's website.
She said it was jad chak (prearranged, a setup).

Pond was paid 10,000 baht by the "Thailand's Got Talent" production team to perform the act during the audition.

"Pond told me that a staffer from Thailand's Got Talent contacted her and hired her for 10,000 baht. That person then told her not to do anything else and to wait for a car to pick her up and take her to the studio. There, she was told to paint with ther bare breasts to raise the ratings," she said.

Pond's friend said she wanted to expose the truth because she could not bear to see her friend being criticised so heavily in the media.

Pond is not an independent artist, as she was introduced on the TV show, but is a nude model who poses for artists and as been working honestly, she said.

"Pond is under a lot of stress because of the heavy criticism from society. Pond is now alone and doesn't want to speak to anyone, but she won't shed a tear because she's a strong woman."

Reports said people had checked the contestant's home address as it appeared on "Thailand's Got Talent" but her name was not shown at the actual address.

The show, broadcast on Channel 3 on Sunday, featured Pond, who introduced herself as an independent artist.

She turned to a large canvas and painted a yellow outline of a person, then removed her shirt and bra and doused herself with paint before using her body as a brush to fill in the outline. She then turned to the audience and displayed her body covered in paint.

The act drew heavy attention, with comments for and against her posted on social media websites. Culture Minister Sukumol Khunploem waded into the controversy, joining the chorus of disapproval. She said the airing of this performance was inappropriate and could have an affect on young viewers.

Panya Nirunkul, president of Workpoint Entertainment Plc, which produces "Thailand's Got Talent", insisted on Monday that the content aired was carefully censored.

He said producers were unaware that the contestant would disrobe but checked the appropriateness of the content before putting it on air. They decided to blur the image. Viewers could barely see anything due to the strict censoring of the contestant's breasts, he said.

Mr Panya said he was ready to provide a full explanation to the Culture Ministry, and denied intending to boost ratings by airing nudity.

One thing this small media event demonstrates is that officially approved notions of "Thai culture" and "Thainess" are mere contrivances. Good show. Well done everybody.

Bare-breasted artist 'hired' to boost shows ratings: report - The Nation

Bare-breasted artist 'hired' to boost shows ratings: report

    THE NATION June 20, 2012 1:00 am

    Panya

The "art or obscenity" scandal over the latest episode of Thailand's Got Talent television show now threatens to expose grave violations of media ethics as allegations came out yesterday that the contestant in question had been "hired" to go on stage.

Following strong criticism of the show's Sunday episode showing a female contestant paint on canvas with her bare breasts, Thai Rath newspaper reported yesterday that Duangjai Jansaunoi, 23, had been hired by the show's producers - Workpoint Entertainment.

The news report quoted a close friend of the contestant as saying that Duangjai had been paid Bt10,000 to help boost the show's ratings, but she did not know what she had to do until just before the show was recorded. The friend went on to say that Duangjai was not an independent artist as claimed but a nude model in real life.

Meanwhile, Workpoint Entertainment CEO Panya Nirankul dismissed the allegations in an interview on the "Reung Den Yenni" TV show yesterday, saying that he had asked around and concluded that Thailand's Got Talent producers had nothing to do with it. He explained that agents hunted down many of the contestants, which might be the reason behind this controversy.

Asked if the producers of the show had indeed told Duangjai to take her top off in order to boost ratings, Panya said Thailand's Got Talent was already successful enough so it was very unlikely.

However, he said, he had not yet spoken to the contestant or the agent who had brought her to the show, but admitted that he had made a mistake by thinking that partially censoring the image would be sufficient and promised that it would not happen again.

Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome, who had slammed the producers for allowing the broadcast of an unacceptable show, said yesterday that Panya had called her to explain that the show had been partially censored.

She added that she had warned him that programmes should have a content-screening system to prevent such inappropriate images from being broadcast. She said that Panya had promised that such inappropriate images would not be shown again.

Somchai Sianglai, Culture Ministry's permanent secretary, said yesterday that he had instructed the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission to scrutinise Thailand's Got Talent and would write to Panya asking for cooperation and telling him to be cautious about what is broadcast in the future.

Panya had told a Monday press conference that contestants would no longer be allowed to behave in a controversial manner and that the show was only being broadcast so people could show off their talents.

However, people are still doubtful of Panya's explanations because the programme had been recorded two months ago and this bit should have been edited out, especially after Thai entertainment news had hinted about it even before the show was aired.

News agencies across the world have also picked up on the controversy surrounding the latest episode of Thailand's Got Talent.

Perhaps someone should warn our culture minister about souding too much like mary whitehouse, it might encourage someone to start publishing a soft porn magazine called Kunplome.

Does anyone else think that Panya in that photo above looks far more effeninate than our culture minister. You have to wonder if he's friends with butters or even socal if he's into dresses

No hire fee for breast paint artist | Bangkok Post: news

No hire fee for breast paint artist

The president of the company that produced a TV talent show containing a controversial breast-painting act has denied paying the female contestant.

Panya Nirunkul, president of Workpoint Entertainment Plc, which produces Thailand's Got Talent, dismissed a report that his company hired the contestant to put on the performance.

He said the woman was approached by the show's agents, just like other competitors.

A Thai Rath online report Tuesday quoted a friend of breast-painting contestant Duangjai Jansaunoi, 23, as saying Ms Duangjai was paid 10,000 baht by staff of the weekly Channel 3 show.

Ms Duangjai's act of pouring paint on her bare breasts and using them to paint on canvas has provoked uproar from the Ministry of Culture and members of the artistic community.

While Ms Duangjai told the audience she was an independent artist, her friend said the contestant was actually a nude model. "It's an honest profession. I am telling the truth that the show is scripted because I can't stand seeing my friend getting blasted by the whole of society about her act," she said.

Mr Panya apologised for broadcasting the act and promised such an incident would not happen again.

He told the Ruang Den Yen Nee news programme on Channel 3 Tuesday that the firm had no intention of causing an outcry as it respected Thai arts and culture.

National artist for visual arts Chaloemchai Kositpipat said that while he does not regard Ms Duangjai's act as obscene or inappropriate, he does not consider it as beautiful expression either.

"Body painting may be new in Thailand but it's an old art form in other countries. What I think the contestant did was copy its form and method without understanding the essence of this art form, which includes not only a show of the body but a combination of lines, colours, texture and overall balance," Mr Chaloemchai said.

Gridthiya Gaweewong, an art curator, said this kind of performance art was usually held in art galleries or museums. When it appeared on a TV talent show, questions inevitably arose.

"The point is: Is this a good quality painting? No, it is not. What's more important is that the woman didn't have a real idea or reason to back up her show. There's no context, no conceptual thinking behind it.

"If you're an artist, you must have an idea why you're doing your art."

Kannika Soonthornyankit, an amateur artist, said she was flabbergasted by the show. "This is not art, nor creativity. It's a waste," she said.

She said the show's decision to air the act was aimed only at boosting its ratings while ignoring possible adverse effects, especially on young viewers.

Pol Maj Gen Saroj Promcharoen, deputy commander of the Metropolitan Police, said police would wait for an opinion from various authorities including the Culture Ministry on whether the show breached public obscenity laws, before deciding whether to press charges.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will meet Channel 3 today to discuss whether the channel broke the law.

Gen Peerapong Manakit, chairman of the NBTC's subcommittee on broadcasting, said the content might have violated Section 37 of the Radio and Television Broadcasting Act 2008.

"The broadcaster should have ethics and be concerned more about the public than TV producers who just want to make a profit," Gen Peerapong said.

Channel 3 fined for airing breast painting

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Wednesday decided to impose a fine of 500,000 baht on Channel 3 for allowing a controversial breast-painting act to be broadcast on a TV show, reports said.

On Sunday, a 23-year-old female contestant performed a breast-painting act on Thailand's Got Talent programme. The act has provoked uproar from the Culture Ministry and public members.

Gen Peerapong Manakit, chairman of the NBTC's subcommittee on broadcasting, said on Tuesday that the content might have violated section 37 of the Radio and Television and Broadcasting Act 2008.

Boy Thai band to protest against TGT

    The Nation June 20, 2012 8:46 pm

Pisces Music plans to protest against "Thailand's Got Talent" producers for allegedly violating its copyrights and using the company's copyrighted songs in an inappropriate way.

The show used the song "Andaman Sun" from Boy Thai's second album as the backdrop for the recent controversial painting-by-breast episode. The company, which holds the copyright on the band's songs, said as the show has now been uploaded to YouTube, and people may misunderstand the band's involvement.

Managing director Amporn Chakkaphak said that the company had promoted Boy Thai's three albums overseas and that the band had promoted Thai culture since it was founded in 1987. "We are not very pleased that the music has been used in an inappropriate way," she said.
