Can anyone answer this:
My first trip to Thailand, about 2004-5ish, I walked into a bank, with a tourist visa only, and opened a bank account. Think it was the yellow bank, SCB?
Anyway, I used the card for the next couple of years in and out of Thailand, then one day an ATM swallowed it, in about 2008. I went into a branch in Bangkok(where no English was spoken) and they wouldn't give me a replacement. I then withdrew all the cash obviously.
Question being, was I supposed to have been able to open a bank account without an address and WP in the first place, or did the rules change in the meantime? What are the rules now, could I open one again next time I'm there with a tourist visa?
Reason I ask is I couldn't fathom the reason they gave me at the BKK branch for why they wouldn't give me a new one, and if I can do it again I'll just bring a few grand to pay in instead of paying the piss taking ATM fees every time I want to withdraw a few thousand baht, and will have no need for this limited balance one.
