So probably not a tanker truck.

traffic was bad this morning
thank God no one was killed

I guess it could be a pickup truck carrying cooking gas lpg tanks. I'm only surprised it does not happen more often

I can remember a similar explosion on Phetburi Rd which adjoins Pattanarkarn Rd about 15 years ago which cost a lot of lives.

Very lucky this time and very avoidable if proper care had been taken.

If you stop and think about how many LPG tankers are on the road here everyday then care is obviously taken by most.

Unfortunately you occasionally get fools behind the wheels of these vehicles everywhere in the world.

I think it says more about the robustness of the tanks than it does about the care taken by the people who handle the them.

LPG Gas Truck Explodes After Accident

An LPG truck crashed into a bridge railing on Pattanakarn Road early this morning, causing a gas leak and subsequent explosions.

Early this morning at around 5.30 A.M., a six-wheeled LPG gas truck of Siam Gas Company with the license plate 75-3816 Bangkok, crashed into a bridge railing on Pattanakarn Road between Soi 20 and 22.



Gas leaked and exploded, causing a fireball as high as a five-storey building.

Explosions continued as the truck carried 4,000 liters of gas.

Those living nearby were evacuated out of their homes. Some seven shophouses sustained damage to their windows.

An unidentified male victim has been seriously injured from the blast and is undergoing treatment at Petcharawej Hospital.

Two more people injured from the blast have been sent to the Viparam and Paetpanya hospitals.

The Klongtan police closed off both the inbound and outbound traffic on Pattanakarn Road from the Klongtan intersection to Pattanakarn Soi 25 to put out the fire.

Klongtan Police Station Commander, Police Major Sittipap Baiprasert disclosed that the gas leak is now under control but traffic will remain closed until all the gas in the truck is burned off.

It has been reported that the truck driver escaped from the scene as soon as the accident happened.

Ministry Mulls Tighter Safety for Gas Trucks

The Energy Ministry plans to meet with energy transportation operators to set up safety standards for gas equipment and transportation.

Energy Business Department Director General Weerapol Jirapraditkul disclosed that he will meet with gas business operators to discuss safety measures for gas trucks and drivers by next week.


This follows an accident involving an LPG truck crashing into the bridge railing on Pattanakan Road between Soi 20 and 22 early this morning and the subsequent gas leak and explosions.

Officials decided to burn the remaining four tons of LPG in the tank, which took more than six hours. Forensic police moved in to inspect the truck and the accident scene after the blaze was put out.

The director general affirmed that the department conducts annual inspection of gas trucks before permits are renewed.

Forensic police have confirmed that last week's gas tanker crash in Bangkok's Phatthanakan area was caused by its driver falling asleep at the wheel.

The Scientific Crime Detection Division has examined evidence and determined the crash was caused by Anan Kaeoma, 34, falling asleep as he drove, division chief Pol Lt Gen Peerapong Damapong said.

Three people were injured, one seriously, after the truck carrying 4,000 litres of liquefied petroleum gas hit the railing of Khlong Ban Pa bridge near Khlong Sakae community on Phatthanakan Road, between Phatthanakan Soi 20 and Soi 22 on Friday. LPG leaked from the tank and caught fire, with flames shooting 10m into the air.

One of the three injured people _ Buaphan Suwansaen, 66, a worker at a wood trading company _ sustained burns over much of his body. Five houses were damaged.

Mr Anan faces charges of causing damage to others' assets and causing serious injury. He fled the scene and has not turned himself in to police. The lorry belonged to Peeratas Land & Transport Co. Pol Lt Gen Peerapong said evidence showed the vehicle's brakes were not applied before it crashed.
