Phuket 'Body Parts' Found in Expat's Luxury Mansion

PHUKET: Police have found what they believe are human remains at the Phuket mansion of a wealthy Scandinavian man - and they say he may have murdered his Thai girlfriend.

Thirty police raided the man's seven-bedroom 15 million-baht home in the west coast holiday destination of Kata and discovered suspicious bones in plastic bags in a basement bin.

The man, who studied medicine for two years, has denied murdering his girlfriend.

Aged 50, the man was being held at Chalong Police Station today on a charge of possession of an illegal firearm - a gun that was registered in the name of the missing woman.

In what is one of Phuket's most sensational missing persons cases, perseverance by the family of the Thai girlfriend, who disappeared in 2009, may yet produce a remarkable conclusion.

The raid on the man's luxury Phuket mansion took place early yesterday evening and an intense search of the premises followed until early today.

ID cards, a watch and other items belonging to the missing woman were found.

After officers discovered the plastic bin in the basement and opened its contents, a shocking smell filled the room. Police believe human remains may be in bags in the bin.

Colonel Atip Tannin, of the Bangkok-based Crime Suppression Division, led the raid. ''The remains have been sent already to facilities at Surat Thani where their DNA will be determined,'' he said.

In the house with the Norwegian man last night was a Thai woman, his current girlfriend, who told officers she had been staying there for six months and knew nothing about her partner's previous relationships.

His partner of 10 years, Rungnapa Ratchasombut, 33, was reported missing on July 19, 2009. She had two children from a previous marriage to a policeman.

Her anxious family, from Surat Thani, pressed Phuket police and officers at Region 8 HQ for information and eventually went to Bangkok and conveyed their suspicions to the Crime Suppression Division.

In last night's raid, police found a handgun registered to Khun Rungnapa, with 58 bullets, and charged the man with illegal possession of the weapon.

The man denied any knowledge of the items found in the bin or of having any connection with the disappearance of his former partner.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

At home the husband/boyfriend/partner would have been the prime suspect from the start until evidence led otherwise, and his house would have been searched and forensically tested at the time she went missing either with his consent or with a search warrant.
Some things are the same everywhere, only the competence and determination of the investigators is different.

Had her family been Issan rice farmers with no political pull, this likely would never have been solved.

I don't know bobr, I think thou will find that the majority of people in thailand fall into the category of having no political pull, its not something limited to the rice farmers of issan. What this does show is if you want anything done in this country, you have to be prepared to fight for it, fight for years and if you do there is a chance for some success. Thats if you could call discovering your daughter as been dead and lying in a basement for three years a success anyone would ever want.

^given the nature of law inforcment in thailand and the general disenfranchisement of the population, dispite this evidence to the country; I don't think in general murders have to worry too much about keeping the remains of their dead girlfriends in the basement.

No offense intended by the rice farmer comment, I only said it that way since so many bar girls are from those families, and yes you are right about the majority having little or no political pull. Suspecting the boyfriend/husband if a woman goes missing (not immediately arresting him but having some suspicion of his story) is statistically valid and something any competent cop anywhere would do.
He must have been quite stupid to keep the body this long.

Sad story. Still have to say, this sort of thing happens all the time all over the world. If he had half a brain he would have disposed of the body. Must have feared that he was being watched.

Wonder if he missed a protection payment here.

^^^I didn't take or think you offered offence and you are depressingly correct in your assessment.

I think he clearly demonstrated his stupidity by killing her in the first place; there are much better ways of dumping your girlfriend. changing the locks, making sure she finds you in bed with a couple of other women actively doing the deed (I think davis has unwittingly come close to this one), I am sure TD is full of stories of creatively dumping the ex girlfriend that don't involve murder.

But then maybe she was dumping him and he's one of these aggressive control freaks types that kill their wives/girfrends the world over.

For 3 months you could smell decomp all over Phuket. I think you'd recognise it straight away if you were a copper in 2004/5.

This story does stink in more ways that one doesn't it? Presumably an educated Norwegian doctor would be well aware of effective methods to dispose of a corpse in a tropical climate surrounded by warm and quite deep seas.

Ex (jilted?) boyfriends are as likely suspects in proper countries (with effective, functioning police forces) as a new beau perhaps too?

Not a smell I ever wanted to get used to, and certainly not one I'd ever want to smell again.

I've been back to Wat Yan Yao on a number of anniversaries, and you could swear you still smell it.

PHUKET: The Norwegian man arrested last night after the gruesome remains of a human body were found in his Phuket home has confessed to “accidentally killing” Rungnapa Suktong, his girlfriend of nine years.

Stein Havard Dokset, a 50-year-old retired car dealer from Oslo, Norway confessed to officers at Chalong Police Station today.

“I did it, but it was an accident,” he said.

“We had an argument. She pushed me and then I pushed her, and she fell down the stairs. I checked her pulse and she was not breathing… I didn’t know what to do. I was scared, so I hid her body,” he told police.

Mr Dokset was arrested at his house off Soi Koktanode in Kata last night when officers from Crime Suppression Division, Sub Division 5, in Bangkok, arrived in force along with Chalong Police and Phuket Provincial Police.

About 20 officers were involved in the raid, the Phuket Gazette was told.

The raid was coordinated after a tip-off from a Bangkok law firm who were working on a missing person report filed by Mrs Rungnapa’s family in Surat Thani two years ago.

She was last seen a year before her family reported her as missing, said Pol Col Atip Tannin, superintendent of Crime Suppression Division Subdivision 5, who led the raid on the house.

In the downstairs bathroom, which was locked, police found a plastic trash bin belonging to Karon Municipality.

Inside the bin police found pieces of flesh and a hip bone they believed were human. The flesh was so decayed that police could not learn any more from their gruesome discovery.

The officers immediately dispatched the remains to Surat Thani for examination last night.

The results, returned today, confirmed their fears: the flesh and bone were human.

The coroner in Surat Thani also reported that the decay of the remains had been accelerated by some form of acid.

The coroner is now conducting DNA tests to confirm whether or not the remains are those of Mrs Rungnapa, police said.

Police also found in the bathroom a woman’s purse, one 9mm pistol and 58 bullets.

A check of the registered owner of the gun confirmed that it belonged to Mrs Rungnapa.

Police officers then scoured the house for more clues, including a pump room. Believing that more remains might have been hidden in the septic tank, police ordered for the tank to be emptied.

A search of the tank’s contents, however, revealed nothing other than the obvious.

Parichat Sriraksa, a 30-year-old cousin of Mrs Rungnapa, told the Gazette that Mrs Rungnapa worked as a maid in Patong.

“She was Mr Dokset’s girlfriend for nine years. They lived together in his house for six years,” she said.

Mrs Rungnapa left Mr Dokset and started a relationship with a new boyfriend, a police officer in Patong. The policeman – who police have yet to name – and Mrs Rungnapa married and had one son, but Mrs Rungnapa sent her son to stay with her family in Surat Thani, Miss Parichat explained.

Mrs Rungnapa, who on marriage stopped using her maiden name Ratsombat and assumed her policeman husband’s family name Suktong, was reported missing one year after she left Mr Dokset, which was more than two years ago, said Miss Parichat.

“Rungnapa had two other sons, 12 and 14 years old, both of whom are from her marriage from before she met Mr Dokset or the policeman,” she said.

Those sons and more than 10 relatives from Surat Thani were at the house today.

“We had reported Rungnapa as missing to the Patong Police before,” Miss Parichat said.

“We always suspected that she was murdered. We saw blood stains in her car when the bank came to repossess it after no payments were made since she went missing,” she added.

“Patong police promised to take care of the case, but they didn’t really take any action. So we decided to ask for help from the media and everyone else we could possibly get. Finally we got Crime Suppression Division to help find my cousin,” Miss Parichat said.

Mr Dokset initially denied the charges against him.

Up until his confession this afternoon, Mr Dokset was being held on charges of hiding the body and possession of a firearm, Chalong Police confirmed.

He said knew nothing about the body parts in his house, Chalong Police told the Gazette this morning.

Mr Dokset also debunked reports that he was a doctor. He told police that he went to a medical school for two years, but did not graduate.

During his time in Phuket, Mr Dokset rented out his own properties for income.

Police are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence in the case.
