This episode reminds me a bit of 1998, when Iraq sent terrorist teams around the world to attack specific targets. They were supplied with arms and explosives which had been sent to the respective Iraqi Embassies in the diplomatic pouch, and then issued to the teams. These were also three-man teams. One of the first teams to activate was in Manila, where they attempted to bomb the American Cultural Center. Unfortunately (for them), they screwed it up and prematurely detonated the bomb outside on the sidewalk, killing two of the three. Evidence recovered at the scene included passports, which revealed that the Iraqi government had issued all of the would-be bombers with consecutively numbered passports. In a worldwide intelligence effort focusing on the known passport numbers, all of the other teams were either arrested or blocked from entering their target countries.

    Residential area becomes warzone

Residents and workers near the site of the three bomb blasts in central Bangkok described scenes of bedlam, while neighbours spoke of the quiet but apparently busy nature of the suspected bombers in their midst.

Da Klongdan, 34, who lives opposite the two-storey house where the first explosion occurred around 2.20pm, said four foreigners _ three men and one woman _ frequently went in and out of the building.

They routinely left the house, on Soi Pridi Banomyong 31, off Sukhumvit Soi 71 in the Ekamai area, at 10am or 1pm, and would be gone for about 30 minutes each time.

After the first blast, which ripped off the roof of the house, Ms Da said she saw two fair-skinned foreigners _ one wearing a white top and calf-length trousers, the other a blue shirt and jeans and carrying a bag _ rushing out of the building. They left in a taxi.

Five minutes after that, another fair-skinned man walked out carrying a backpack and two boxes. His face was bleeding.

He tried to flag down a taxi but none would pick him up because of the blood. The man, later identified as Saeid Moradi, threw a grenade onto the street close to a taxi driven by Sanchai Boonsoongnern.

Mr Sanchai, who was slightly injured, said it landed on the bonnet, then fell below his car and exploded.

"I saw he was the man who threw the bomb, so I told people to chase him. I ran after him," said Mr Sanchai.

"Once he reached the entrance of Sukhumvit Soi 71, he tried to wave down some cars but no-one picked him up. Then police came by."

Mr Sanchai, who suffered a wound to his face from broken glass in the blast, said the suspect pulled something out of his pocket.

He did not see exactly what happened but another blast followed which blew off Mr Moradi's legs.

Naris Laddathao, a security guard at a nearby school, also witnessed the third blast.

He said after the second explosion he saw a foreigner with a bloody face walking on Soi Pridi Banomyong 31.

Mr Naris said he saw people pointing at the man and shouting: "Get him, get him!" A police car approached and the man tried to throw a bomb at the officers but it bounced back towards him and exploded, blowing off his legs.

Kamala Sanangkul, 43, lives just 20m from the rented house where the first blast took place. She said that after a loud explosion, thick smoke poured into her house. She ran outside and saw two Middle Eastern-looking men carrying backpacks and artificial roses walking away from the scene.

"I went back inside the house and saw a lot of broken glass. Then I saw another man with a backpack run off. He was carrying something with a blinking light in his hand. He had a wound on his head," Ms Kamala said.

Asanee Chunhakasikarn, 72, whose home is next to the suspects' house, said they had moved in about two months ago and lived quietly.

"I am so shocked to learn there were bombs in the house next to mine," he said. "How can something like this happen here?"

Hotel staff shocked by 'polite' bomber

PATTAYA : Iranian bomb suspect Saeid Moradi, 28, checked in to Top Thai hotel in Pattaya on Feb 8 late at night with a backpack.

Pictures of the three suspects caught on a surveillance camera at Soi Pridi Banomyong 31. The man in the middle is Saeid Moradi and the one on the right is Mohummad Hazaei, who was later caught at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Shortly afterwards, he called a friend who arrived at the hotel with a large piece of luggage.

The six-storey building is in a small alley behind another hotel next to Pattaya 2 Road, a bustling area of night venues.

Because it is relatively small and old, guests are not subject to strict checks.

"We usually have no idea what the guests bring in," one hotel employee said.

Since both men were well presented and polite, hotel employees did not pay them much attention.

"Mr Moradi was good-looking and dressed neatly, as if he was a young entrepreneur," said the worker. "He was also polite and I can't believe that he would be a bomber."

The employee said Mr Moradi and his friend mostly stayed in their room. They didn't come down for breakfast or lunch and only in the evening or at night would they venture out. On Feb 11, Mr Moradi booked his room for one more night. He and his companion checked out on Monday at 11.58am and Mr Moradi left a 500 baht tip. Police yesterday checked Mr Moradi's room and reviewed CCTV footage.

The target was less my point than the similarity of (a) three-man teams, (b) use of C4 plastic explosives in both cases, and (3) attacks in countries which are traditionally not target countries.

Botched Thai Bombing Plot Ratchets Up Pressure on Iran

    By JAMES HOOKWAY

BANGKOK—An apparently botched bomb plot in the Thai capital put Iranian fingerprints on the latest of a string of attacks that have raised U.S. and Israeli warnings of a heightened threat of terrorism sponsored by Tehran.

Three explosions tore through a bustling Bangkok neighborhood Tuesday, wounding four bystanders and blowing off the legs of a bomber who Thai police said was an Iranian national. A second Iranian passport holder who fled the scene was detained at the city's international airport, Thai police said.

Explosions in Bangkok, Thailand injure the bomber and several other people, according to local media. Video, photo: Reuters.

The blasts follow alleged plots in India and Georgia on Monday, and in Azerbaijan and Thailand last month, which Israel has blamed on Iran or its Lebanese militant ally, Hezbollah. Iran denied involvement in Monday's incidents and didn't comment on the Bangkok blasts.

The State Department on Tuesday moved closer than it has this year to pointing the finger at Iran. The attacks "serve as a reminder that a variety of states and nonstate actors continue to view international terrorism as a legitimate foreign policy tool, which we consider reprehensible," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

The accusations come as Iran faces growing international pressure. On Tuesday, senior European and American officials said the European Union was moving as early as this month to ban blacklisted Iranian entities from using a clearing system for international financial transactions, a move that would drastically cut Tehran's ability to access the global financial system.

The Belgium-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or Swift, oversees the network used by virtually all the world's largest banks to conduct financial wire transfers.

That plan joins a snowballing effort to squeeze Tehran and force it to return to international negotiations over its nuclear program.

Shipping giants AP Moller Maersk A/S, Frontline Ltd. and Teekay Tankers Ltd. said their ships will no longer call at Iranian ports as an EU embargo on Iranian oil begins to take hold months before its July 1 launch.

A security lockdown in Iranian cities on Tuesday stifled antigovernment protests, but the political opposition is hoping a boycott of parliamentary elections on March 2 will send a message of discontent with the government from a public coping with rising inflation and a plummeting currency.

Shows of aggressiveness abroad play well with regime supporters in Iran. In a sign of defiance, Iran will announce a new advance in its nuclear program on Wednesday, an Iranian official told a Russian news agency, Reuters reported.

The incidents this week, following the Thai discovery in January of an alleged Hezbollah bomb plot, have raised accusations that Iran has begun to follow through on a threat to target Israeli or U.S. interests around the world in retaliation for the killing of an Iranian nuclear scientist in Tehran on Jan. 11. The U.S. and U.K. denied involvement in the Tehran incident, while Israel hasn't commented.

Thai police said the first of Tuesday's explosions occurred in an apartment rented by three foreigners, at least two of whom held Iranian passports.

After the men fled the building, one of them, bleeding heavily, threw what appeared to be an improvised bomb at a taxi after the driver refused to let him in.

The injured man then attempted to throw another explosive device when he encountered a police patrol nearby, said Police Maj.-Gen. Pisit Pisutsak. "The bomb instead dropped next to him and blew off his legs," Gen. Pisit said.

Thai authorities identified the injured man as an Iranian national, Saeid Moradi. A second Iranian who fled the explosion, identified as Muhammad Hazei, was detained at the airport as he attempted to leave for Malaysia, according to Thai police. At least two unexploded devices were found in their house, police said.

"The attempted terrorist attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies continue to perpetrate terror," said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak in a statement.

Thailand isn't considered a major terrorist target, but is a popular tourist destination for Israelis, especially young people finishing their military service. It is also a hub for American and other Western expatriates.

The Obama administration has refrained for the most part from directly blaming Iran for planning attacks abroad—though the U.S. said in October that Iran was behind a plot to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington, a charge Iran denied.

But on Tuesday, Ms. Nuland of the State Department emphasized that this week's events "come on the heels of other disrupted attacks targeted at Israel and Western interests, including an Iranian-sponsored attack in Baku, Azerbaijan, and a Hezbollah-linked attack in Bangkok, Thailand, before this."

After Tuesday's explosions in Bangkok, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it hadn't raised its alert status in the wake of the incidents overseas.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, after Monday's attacks, said U.S. officials would work to protect diplomatic personnel around the world.

Associated Press A Thai bomb squad officer checked a backpack in Bangkok on Tuesday.

In New York, the NYPD has been conducting bomb sweeps in recent days and has maintained an increased police presence in recent weeks at Israeli government facilities and synagogues, although there has been no specific threat in the city, according to law enforcement officials.

Iran responded to sanctions early this year by threatening to disrupt oil trade from the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. That threat led to a bout of saber-rattling that took form on Tuesday when Iranian patrol boats and aircraft shadowed a U.S. aircraft carrier as it passed through the strait at the end of a Gulf mission, the Associated Press reported.

Officers aboard the ship, the USS Abraham Lincoln, said the Iranian surveillance was routine, according to the AP.

India, despite its position as one of Iran's top oil markets, could be an appealing location to stage an attack like the bombing of the Israeli vehicle, independent security experts said.

"It would be fairly difficult to mount…in better-policed countries and countries with a better intelligence apparatus," said Ajai Sahni, executive director of the New Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management.

Police inspected the site of an explosion in Bangkok Tuesday. Three explosions tore through Thailand's capital, wounding four bystanders and blowing off the legs of a man police suspected was an Iranian assailant.

A bomb disposal expert worked at the scene of an explosion in central Bangkok Tuesday. Thai police said the explosions began in an apartment rented by three foreigners, at least one of whom was carrying Iranian documents.

Officers from the police's anti-bomb squad inspected the ground near one of the explosions.

Another grenade damaged a telephone booth outside a Thai school, shown here being examined by bomb disposal experts.

After police were finished, cleaners removed glass and debris from around the phone booths.

When the Iraqi Embassy showed up in 1998 to assist the one surviving bomber (who had no passport on him when captured) in Manila and ask he be returned to their custody, the Filipino authorities told them as soon as they signed papers admitting that he was theirs, he would be put on a plane back to Iraq. The Embassy delegation left, never to return.

Sukumpol rules out three explosions as terror attacks

    February 15, 2012 10:14 am

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat on Wednesday tried to allay anxiety over the Tuesday's triple explosions in Bangkok, saying the blasts should not be construed as terror attacks.

"In my personal view, the bad men were trying to assemble bombs which led to the explosions," he said.

Sukumpol said police had already taken custody of two Iranian bomber suspects. Another suspect remains at large after fleeing a rented house on Soi Predi Banomyong 31 off Sukhumvit 71.

Thai police arrest Iranian suspect linked to Bangkok bombing

    Feb 15, 2012, 2:39 GMT

Bangkok - Police arrested an Iranian national at Bangkok's airport after linking him with three explosions in the Thai capital and were searching for a third suspect Wednesday.

The defence minister, Air Chief Marshal Sukhumpol Suwannathat, insisted Wednesday that the explosions were not acts of terrorism but failed to provide an explanation for Tuesday's bombing spree, which ended with one Iranian blowing off his own legs.

Police arrested Mohammad Hazai, 42, at Suvarnabhumi Airport Tuesday evening as he was about to board a plane to Kuala Lumpur.

Hazai had been identified by surveillance cameras as one of three Iranians staying at a rented house in Bangkok where a bomb was detonated Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. After the blast, Hazai and another suspect fled the scene, they said.

Police were still searching for the other suspect who left the house, where, officers said, C-4 plastic explosives were found.

A third man, identified as Iranian national Saeib Morabi, ran from the house and tried to hail a taxi. When taxis refused to stop for him, he hurled a grenade at one of them, injuring the driver and three pedestrians, authorities said.

The man fled but was followed by a police car. Police said he threw another grenade at the police car but it bounced off a pickup and blew up next to him, severing both his legs.

The explosions prompted the US and British embassies to reissue travel warnings to their citizens visiting Bangkok that had been recently dropped.

Last month, the US and 10 other embassies issued travel warnings after being informed of planned terrorist attacks on American and Israeli citizens in Bangkok.

On January 16, Thai police found 400 boxes of the bombmaking materials urea and ammonium nitrate in a shophouse believed to be linked to the plot to carry out the attacks.

Police sid they were alerted to the cache by Attis Hussein, a Swedish-Lebanese man arrested days after the US embassy travel alert on suspicion of being a member of the Hezbollah militant group.

Thai authorities have a mixed policy of promoting the country as a tourist destination for all and maintaining security.

'There has been a significant increase in Iranian tourists visiting Thailand last year,' said a Thai diplomat who asked to remain anonymous.

    Blasts linked to 'international tensions'

A series of blasts in Bangkok that seriously wounded a suspected Iranian bomber are linked to global political tensions, a Thai official said Wednesday, after Israel accused Tehran of involvement.

"Yesterday's incident was caused by current international tensions in world politics," National Security Council secretary-general Wichean Potephosree told a news conference on Wednesday morning.

"It's happening not only in Thailand but also elsewhere."

A man carrying an Iranian passport had his legs blown off as he hurled an explosive device at Thai police in one of three blasts in Bangkok on Tuesday, officials said.

The explosions came a day after bombers targeted Israeli embassy staff in the capitals of India and Georgia, with a female diplomat seriously wounded in New Delhi, in attacks that were plotted by Iran, according to Israel.

Thai bomb squad experts were called out to the Sukhumvit Road area in the east of the city after an apparently unintended blast at a house, following which three men were seen fleeing, authorities said.

One of the men hurled an explosive device at a taxi, which refused to stop, and then tried to throw another at police, triggering a blast at the side of a busy road which tore off his legs, they said.

Authorities detained a second Iranian man trying to board a flight out of the country while the third suspect was believed to have fled to Malaysia.

Bangkok has been on the watch for a terror attack since police last month charged a Lebanese man suspected of planning a strike following a US warning that tourist areas might be targeted.

US condemns Thailand blasts, notes recent pattern of Iranian-linked terror plots

    By Associated Press,
Updated: Wednesday, February 15, 12:48 AM

WASHINGTON — The U.S. is condemning a pair of small blasts in Thailand’s capital and suggesting they may be linked to Iran.

Thai authorities say an Iranian man carrying grenades blew off his own legs and wounded four civilians Tuesday after a blast shook his Bangkok house.

The explosions came a day after an Israeli diplomatic car was bombed in India. Israel blamed the attack on Iran.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was awaiting the results of investigations. She offered condolences to those injured.

Nuland didn’t blame Iran directly. But she noted Monday’s incidents in India and Georgia, and recent “Iranian-sponsored” and “Hezbollah-linked” plots to attack Israeli and Western interests in Azerbaijan and Thailand.

She called it “reprehensible” for states to use terrorism as a foreign policy tool.
Funny, the US did not issue any condemnation when Israel planted bombs in the cars of Iranian scientists. Apparently the "terrorism" word has more to do with who is involved than the tactics they use.

    Oh really?

In a worldwide intelligence effort focusing on the known passport numbers, all of the other teams were either arrested or blocked from entering their target countries.
That's hilarious, if someone saw that part about the passport numbers in a fictional movie, they would get angry, as in "what a dumb movie, that could never happen."
They have a long way to go before they're ready to match wits with Mossad.

Home-made bombs meant for individual targets: NSC

    February 15, 2012 11:06 am

The explosive devices found at the rented house off Sukhumvit 71 were meant for individual targets, National Security Council secretary general Wichean Potephosree said on Wednesday.

Based on prelimanary checks by police, Iranian bomber suspects, one at large and two in police's custody, want to target individuals although it remains unclear about potential targets or organisations, Wichean said.

I think they are splitting hairs...

Of course, these bombings, per se, were not a terrorist attack - they were an accident which probably prevented a terrorist attack.

India to seek cooperation on bomb explosion

    India News February 15, 2012 11:31 am

The Delhi Police Tuesday said it will cross-check with the authorities in Georgia and Bangkok to find out more about the explosives used in the bomb attack on an Israeli embassy car Monday in Delhi, India News online reported.

"We will get the samples of explosives from Georgia where a bomb was defused and from Bangkok, where an attack has taken place. We will check whether the same kind of explosives was used in Monday’s blast," Delhi Commissioner of Police B.K. Gupta told reporters.

Four people, including the wife of an Israeli diplomat, were injured in the car bomb blast Monday.

Yep. That one little screw-up, and the fact that it was quickly noted and acted upon, no doubt prevented numerous other attacks. As I recall, there were thirteen teams deployed against targets primarily in Asia and Europe. None succeeded.
