Odd that, according to the media there are insurgents and militants in the South, but no terrorists.

    Aree condemns 'inhumane' beheading

(dpa) - The leading Islamic member of the Thai government on Monday condemned the continued violence in the southernmost provinces, where Muslims are a majority of the population.

Interior Minister Aree Wong-araya singled out the murder and decapitation of a rubber farm worker as "inhumane and brutal."

On Sunday a rubber tapper and his wife, both 38, were killed in an insurgent ambush in Yala Province and then the man was beheaded.

Aree, who is from Bangkok, called the act "beyond any definition of brutality" and said he had never seen such cruel incidents during his working life in the civil service.

"If the killers were real Muslims, they would not do this. We must verify who is influencing the murderers," he said.

Nearly 2,000 people have been killed in connection with the southern insurgency since January 2004 when strife in the southern provinces bordering Malaysia resurfaced. Of those at least 22 have been decapitated.

Meanwhile, on Monday a bomb on a railway line in Narathiwat Province next to Yala province wounded two policemen.

Suspected insurgents placed suspicious materials across the rail line and when police inspected the site the insurgents set off the bomb by remote control. A second bomb in another part of the province exploded about the same time but caused no injuries or damage.

On Sunday night a soldier was killed and five others injured when a bomb exploded under their patrol vehicle.

Narathiwat vendor gunned down in front of daughter

    By Waedao Harai
A noodle vendor mistaken for a police informant by an insurgent group was gunned down yesterday in Cho Airong district, police said. Saimi Mading, 42, was shot dead on Chalusatien road in tambon Chuap.

His 12-year-old daughter Lateefa was found crying while holding her dead father.

She was lucky to have escaped almost unhurt and suffered only a few scratches on her arms and face.

Police said Saimi was shot three times by motorcycle gunmen while he was taking his daughter to school.

Police believe the victim was killed by members of a separatist group in the mistaken belief that he was a police informant.

In neighbouring Pattani, vendors Anirut Nimchua, 41, and Wanida sae See, 51, suffered gunshot wounds during an early morning attack in Sai Buri district.

Police said Mr Anirut was driving a motorcycle with Ms Wanida in a sidecar. The two were heading for Narathiwat's Bacho district when they were attacked by motorcycle gunmen.
Both Mr Anirut and Ms Wanida were hit in the right arm. Police believe insurgents were behind the shooting.

Three paratroopers patrol along a road in Yala’s Bannangsata district on Monday. Hundreds of paratroopers will be deployed to deep south province as part of the government’s bid to end the violence in the south.
