Yanks probably get a 30 day visa exemption stamp at the bangkok airport on arrival, tourist visas to Thailand are free at present in most Thai embassies.

A list of countries have "Tourist Visa Ecemption" - fx. USA - and will be permitted to stay 30 days without a Visa (30 days, NOT one month). You can find the list at The Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
You just arrive at the airport and get the entry stamp with 30 days by the Immigration, when showing your passport.
Only of you wish a longer stay (than 30 days), you will need a Tourist Visa (I believe up to 2 month stay) or other kind of Visa for longer stay.
