And thus I have concluded that a container of no use to me at that price and I'd be cheaper making a trip personally to Scotland and Oz and bringing my stuff back with a with extra baggage pre-declared. Thanks for all the help though, much appreciated.
Dirk.
I visited your other reference page about the container shipping, but i still have a few questions.
1)Was that 6 month grace period after you received the retirement visa?
2)Did you receive that retirement visa here in Thailand or in the USA?
3)BTW, where on the east coast...I'm moving from Wash DC area, so I figure shipping port will be Balt
4) I assume you had room for everything you brought over inside your house.? I will not initially so I'm considering buying the 20 ft container, then trying to utilize it as a storage unit for a few months here in Khon Kaen. Any one have any suggestions on this idea?
BTW that weblink didn't work?
^^
The duty free container had nothing to do with his retirement visa. He got it because his Thai wife was returning from living overseas for over 1 year.
There is no duty free container for a retirement visa or extension of permission to stay

Well I guess I am misinformed, or maybe its just an 'unofficial understanding' for retired persons to be able to bring in some personal goods...but only for a certain amount of time from their initial retirement and move to Thailand. Perhaps it is not official in the laws?
Of course this site quotes, "import personal/household items into Thailand - TAX FREE"
Thailand Retirement Visa for US Citizens - Thailand Visa Application in USA
Siam Legal is a throughly discredited company. The duty free shipment is given based on the work permit not the visa exstention. You don't get a work permit on retirement visa or exstention.
Up to you.

I brought one 20 foot container from the U.S. with my personal possessions (no cars or motorcycles) 4 years ago and was charged 110,000 baht in duty. I still have my house in LOS but have moved back to the U.S., with my thai wife and her 3 kids, so they can go to school here. We will move back in 5-7 years and may send another 20 foot container, in her name, back to LOS. Assuming that the laws don't change, am I right to assume that she can send a container duty free, if she has been outside of LOS for 2 years continuously and the container contains personal possessions in a reasonable number (not 10 refridgerators, etc.). I doubt if we will send a car back. If we sent a motorcycle back, I believe that it would have to be in her name and she would have to own it for at least 2 years before shipping. Would it be better to take it apart and ship it in pieces, also? Can I have a riding lawn mower shipped back and would I have to take it apart, also? I think that shipping a jet ski back would be pushing it but would consider it on advise. Paying tea money to get the container released from customs is alright but paying another 110,000 baht is not. Anyone have any knowledge/experience in these items?

I brought in a 40 foot container just one year ago and the folks at Lat Krabang didn't even open the doors. They cut off the shipping lock but couldn't be bothered to open it up and rummage thru. Didn't pay any Tea money either.
