Thanks Bugs for such a comprehensive response.
I will look up the thai immi site my connection permitting and double check what they say but I am sure now that is what I will try and get.
Thanks again.

When you mean "- Certified Thai registration of the marriage (both in Thai and English)" do you mean I have to get our marriage recognised in Thailand or just provide it if I have already registered our marriage.
We were married in Australia and as far as I am aware have not provided any kind of documentation to thai authorities showing this.
Can I get my Australian wedding certificate translated anywhere or does it have to be done at a certain place? I will be staying near Chong Nonsi BTS for a night before flying to Laos so was planing on getting it done somewhere on Silom road.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.
Perth and Brisbane Consulates will give you a Non-Immigrant 'O' one year multiple entry on the basis you are married to a Thai. Take along your marriage certificate just in case but I doubt you'll require it.
That visa is valid for a year and gives you 90 days every time you enter Thailand with unlimited amount of entries. Can be used just before it expires to give you about 15 months in total. You have to leave every 90 days though but a trip to the border or a trip out the country isn't much hassle.
F*ck putting A$18,000 in a Thai bank account just so you don't have to leave every 90 days. Seriously - f*ck that.
Your status on a Non-Immigrant visa will be exactly the same as someone who reports every 90 days and doesn't have to leave.

Hi ET, thanks for your reply. I agree with the money bit, stupid especially at todays exchange rates which is why I thought what Bugs said sounded good as no money is needed.
I am happy with 90 days as it looks like I will need to go back to Laos in January anyway and have to be in NZ at the end of Feb.
I am already in Thailand so that counts out the Perth or Brissy embassy.
I am hoping Bugs will be back soon to hopefully answer my other question.
You can get to Perth fairly cheap which is why I mentioned it. If you can put up with the hassle and tighten the purse strings you'll probably spend the equivalent you would on a jolly over the border to Laos or Malaysia.
Perth and Brisbane take about 20 minutes to issue these visas in person which means you'll only need a night there. Takes about 3 days by return mail if you use the post office's quickest express service which works out about A$28 interstate. The visa costs about A$260 so it's worth keeping one in your passport anyway if you are a regular visitor.
I just cannot understand why so many people go down the marriage visa route.
The only benefit I can think of is you don't have to leave for the duration of your visa.
I enjoy my trips out of the country. I even enjoyed my last border run to Poipet a couple of months ago, when I missed my flight to Cambodia, on the last day of my visa! I had my pick-up with me so I just drove straight to the border from the airport. Got there at 7pm and made it through and back by closing time at 8pm.
HI ET, I just arrived here and don't want to head back to Aust if I can help it at this stage.
According to bugs who said "You can get a multiple entry non-immigrant "O" visa, based upon being married to a Thai without any proof of income or money in a Thai bank. The proof of income or money in the bank is required to make that "O" visa good for a one year stay, otherwise it will still be good for one year with multiple entries, but each "visit" to Thailand can only last 90 days. "
I will still have to leave every 90 days which as I said earlier doesn't worry me.
MM, Just got a new "O" visa in Vientiane yesterday, Paperwork needed, wife's ID card and Marriage Cert, mine is in English because we were married in NZ and of course a copy of yr passport, two Photographs. You end up with a 90 day visa, you can get this extended at any passport office by another 8 weeks. Giving u 5 months total.
Bit of a bore waiting in Line for a couple of hours to apply, this time of the year its fcking packed.
Then you have to pick it up in the PM next day.
When I went there Perth was only open on Tue & Thu, so you apply on Tue and pick up the visa on Thu.Originally Posted by EmperorTud
Awesome PP as Vientiane is where I plan to get mine done as well.
Where is it located in Vientiane? I read somewhere that you apply from 8.30am - 12.30am and then pick up in the arfo (next day it seems according your post)
So you didn't have a translation done of the wedding certificate then? English is fine (we were married in Aust)
I don't know if it is required to register the marriage in Thialand or not - I doubt it but you should probably check with which ever embassy/consulate you plan to apply for the visa at. A few months after we were married the wife moved back to Thailand and she registered the marriage, not sure why but she did.
As for the translation all of the Thai translations were done and certified at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok.
Actually to register the marriage the wife had to first take the Japanese marriage certificate to the Thai Ministry of Foriegn Affairs in Bangkok they did the translation and certified it. She then took that certified translation to the local office near her home town, and got the marriage registered in Thailand. The document is called "The Family Status Registration".
But from reading thru some of these posts it seems you might not even need to get the translation. Like I said because of the nature of our marriage (Thai and US, married in Japan), I threw everything I could get my hands on at them the first time I applied. Each time I have asked specifically which documents I need to submit and yet have been able to get a good answer out of them at the embassy in Tokyo.

Every Tuk tuk driver knows where it is, its up the road from the strange looking Arc de Triumph edifice. Visa application 8.30 to 12 and pickup from 1pm to 3 pm the next day.
They were happy with my all English Marriage Cert. Take an Umbrella because you may need to spend a bit of time in the sun.
Well I went there this morning and being a Friday I knew I was pushing it trying to get it done in one day but I really want to go home tomorrow and a friend here who is driving me around said that he had i done in one day last year so I thought it was worth a try.
I failed
told me I would need to pick it up on Monday so I said don't worry about it and will enter Thailand tomorrow on my second 30 day visitor visa.
As a side note, I got there at 8.25am and there were about 15 people waiting.
So now my question is in 30 days time is the best place to return to Laos? I have to be out of the country to get it correct?
I am assuming that in 30 days I can go to chong mek and get another 30 days but this would be my last one before having to get this non imm 0 visa.
When i was flying back i got chatting to a guy who was on a 12 month visa and he was doing another one hence flying back??
What was that?
thai consulate in hull offered 90 day, infact i got it just checked.
A multi entry Non Imm O visa is valid for one yearOriginally Posted by navydoubs1977
On entry you will get a 90 day permission to stay.
The only way to get a 365 day permission on entry is with a retirement visa.
Just get a Non O single entry from Laos, no need to show money just marriage cert and as I said before they accept mine in English, copy wifeys ID card and your passport with two photos and your set for 90 days, before that expires go to yr nearest imm office fill out more paper work and they will give you another 60 days. Giving you effectively near 5 months before going thru the cycle again.
of course he was only on the 'pig-island' so that would explain it PP...Originally Posted by peterpan
Thanks for your reply to my PM PP.
If I chose not to go back to Vientiane at the end of m current 30 days can I get another one at chong mek or do I have to go elsewhere?
Can I get a type O visa at Phon Penh?
I think you should get any visa that you can but not for Thailand at this time, no fucking place to be now or for the next year.
It will all be over by this time next week.
All I needed for the 1 year multiple entry non-imm "O" was a copy of the wifes passport, a copy of the marriage certificate and two pics
no money in the bank, cost GB100, need to leave the country after a max of 3 months to get another 3 months, as stated
I don't think you can get it in Bangkok, and it is difficult in Vientane or Pnom Penh, but possible
Singapore may be easier, or KL
I have reported your post
Thanks Dr Andy, however the way things are going with the airports vientiane and Pnom Penh will be my only options.
