| He could start off by looking here as these muppets handle the visa applications nowadays. UK Visa I did mine for the wife a few years ago with them but recently things might have changed. With them not being married could count against. Proof of enough cash to support her for the stay i.e a big wedge in savings or proof of a steady income or sponsor. The rests a bit hazy I'm afraid. |

| If he can prove a relationship going back that long it will be easy. Photos, emails, phone bills etc all help prove contact. Is he in the UK and visits her in thailand or are they both in Thailand and visiting the UK? If he's based in the UK then needs proof of funds or steady income, proof of suitable accommodation and a letter of sponsorship. She may be asked why she wants to go to the UK and what she will do there. Will also have to provide grounds for return to Thailand, eg. property, work etc. If she works she will have to show that she can get time off for the trip (are we talking 6 months or 2 weeks?). A good place to look is on Thailand-UK Website which was set up to help people with these issues. The Visas homepage can make it look deceptively simple when it isn't unless you provide a lot that they don't specifically ask for. |

Even if you supply all of everything they ask for, they can and do still refuse. You might be able to tell I'm bitter. Very good luck to you.

| Yes, some cast irons have been thrown out in the past. There are several things that help, look through the links that have been posted and put yourself together a good application, if you have anything missing from their required documentation, explain the reasons in a covering letter. Reason to return can be a difficult hurdle, but not an altogether impassable one, lean on strong family ties, if nothing else. Good Luck Moss |

| If it is just a visitors visa you need to show a reason for her to return. My missus has had two visa's issued without any hassles. However she has a house, apartment, land and money in the bank. First visa she was working and paid for all her costs over to the UK - wrote a letter stating this. Visa was issued. 2nd she was out here in Korea with me half the year or so. Not working. I wrote a letter stating that as she was now my wife I would be paying. She still showed her bank statements, house/land/apartment papers which is a big thing.

I urge everyone who is trying to get a UK visa for a Thai to look through Thailand-UK Website and then ask a few questions there. I hesitate to offer advice directly because the rules are changing all the time. I hope DD doesn't mind my pushing the site, but it is by far the best reference for people trying to get a visa for a Thai and has lots about NI numbers etc. as well. My connection to it is as someone who stumbled across it when the first visa application for my wife was turned down, I'd never have got the second one through without their help. If you read what they say and apply it you don't need lawyers or any other help. If you can prove contact over 12-18 months you will get a visa provided you follow the advice there.

| They did make it appear deceptively simple. Think it was 2 years ago not long after it opened. Followed their instructions on the site etc to a tee, went to hand it in and it was "wheres form X" or "copy of X with original" if someones done it recently buy them a beer and eek every bit of info out you can. Example is this. I was told by someone working there that I could hand the forms in for the wife, not true she had to. I think we went 3 times until we had everything they wanted, half of which wasnt on the site or in any info they provided. |

| ^if it was the receptionist or the people at this visa centre you might not have needed the stuff anyway. I got two tourist visas for my wife with no problem, but the second time I went some fat receptionist told me I needed all this extra stuff... I'd read the website and told her I didn't, she said if I put in the application it might fail, i told her to put the application in anyway. When I went in to pick up the passport i spoke to one of the embassy guys and he told me that she basically didn't know what she was talking about and the visa was given, no problem. |

| This was after we had waited and gone up to the counter. It was about a month after it had first opened, I cant remember exactly how long ago. The staff were even more clueless then. Just remembered. Checklist on the website, downloaded it and got everything. Got to the desk handed it all and with the checklist. "This is an old checklist, the new ones over there" I was fuming "Dont you think it would be a good idea to update the website?" they did it the next day. |

| Even if you don't succeed in getting the visa, first time around. Re-submit the application and you will find that second time round visa is approved and good to go. So don't get disheartened if you got rejected at the first attempt. Just try again. |

In my case I was applying for a second tourist visa within 2 years and hence it's very straightforward and just a case of re-submitting pretty much the same docs. She tried to get first me, then my wife to go for an interview. I refused as we didn't have one the first time and there's no way we needed one.

although I don't disagree that RtR is quite an important issue on a VV, it is not always the be all and end all, if you have covered all other bases and prepared an otherwise good application, you can still get through without an obvious RtR. Moss
