look for French wine Scampy - it is cheap in Laos.
if you stick to stuff like Chablis you cant go far wrong. I will buy it off you for a small commission.

Question

Important question - I have too much kip and need to spend it all before I leave tomorrow.

At the friendship bridge can I buy beerlao and wine at duty free with Lao Kip on both sides?

I have to do a overnite Visa thing in two weeks so hope you got all the good info Scampy.
If you buy some good Aust red and need some help to drink it, remember texy and I aren't far away.
Don't bother if you buy that crap French Chablis tho', white is for poofs and girls.

beer lao available in cathouse in nana entetainment plaza, (sukhumvit soi 4)
Lots of preservatives in Beer Lao - so it can sit on an offlicence shelf for a year in a hot climate and wait for some twot to buy it

^ Bet it's not 25 baht for a big bottle though.

^^ Are you sure? I think there is a DF on the Thai side. In fact I am 100% sure there is, on the left hand side.

Who cares, it beats the Changs, Leos and Singhas hands down. And did I mention 25 baht for a big bottle.

Why?

If you have to do visa runs all the time, and you are returning again.

Keep the money in an envelope until next you return, saves losing money on the change overs.

Yeah, go buy the French wine at the Duty Free post, extremely cheap, you can buy 5 or 6 no problem, the Thai customs don't care as long as it's properly hidden to save face

Take the nice expensive ones, with names like Pino, Bordeaux, Sauvignon, make sure they all have "AOC" somewhere on the label, this is very important. Total cost would be maybe 2500 THB for 6 bottles, but you can easily sell them back to Blake7 for 3500 THB

I used Kip at the duty free shops by the bridge last week. The only problem was the shops had trouble finding change. They deal mainly in Baht and US$.

For cigs. scotch and DVDs prices are lower at the Lao markets in Vientiane.
Cigs - 100B per carton. (Class 'A' Blue made in Vientiane)
Teachers scotch - US$6 per litre.
Movie (copies) DVDs - 3 for 100B.

I own a small stake in BeerLao (indirectly). They are part owned by a listed Thai construction company. So drink a lot of it

For a retired teacher in my case. I prefer single malts but my budget doesn't run to drinking them regularly. IMO Teachers is superior to the popular Johny Red.

TEACHER'S HIGHLAND CREAM BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY

Nose: The subtle notes of bittersweet chocolate, dark toffee, and bacon fat sneak up on you only after a couple of minutes of air exposure. One of the more complex and elegant bouquets in Scotch blends. Buttery, oily, luscious.

Palate:
The sweet, wine-like, sherry imprint taste of the Glendronach Distillery malts is all over this poised, chewy thoroughbred.

Finish:
Long. Oloroso sherry sweet and almost prune-like. Satiny. I think of the muscular, sinew, peaty side of Speyside malts.

Comment: Cream is the appropriate moniker. Smoky, robust, vibrant.

Funnily enough I have just finished off a bottle of Teachers- maybe 15 years since I've had it and I'd forgotten how good it was especially when you compare it to both Red and Black Johnnie Walker.

Scamp, Laos sounds like a place to stop and get a few refills, might have to venture north one of these days.

In an hour or so, a few of us a meeting Scampy in NK, should be interesting because I am bringing Sandra.
I wonder if Scampy will break down in tears at the mention of her name, blubbering and wanting to spill the whole story again.
Sure hope not but will see I guess.

^ I'm heading off to the pub now. Unfortunately I can't stay long as I've got baby-sitting duties.
