One of my great arguments Rick as I always believed that was not the case.

According to law here you must carry your official identification on you and for most of us that is a passport.

You need it to check into a hotel and if you are doing anything else commercial like changing money at the bank. I have been asked twice on the street in the Sukhumvit area for my passport and I have heard recently people are being asked to produce their passport upon demand in Pattaya also.

Is it law??????????? I am not sure and that is why I am asking the learned here. I have been told carry it to be safe.

Do you have a Thai drivers license? I have checked into many hotels using it alone. Yes, you will get asked for a passport at the bank, but that does not mean you have to carry it on your person all the time.

There was another long discussion on here when an upper level police officer stated all foreigners must carry their passports on their person at all times. He later retracted his statement saying foreigners must only have to present their passports within a reasonable amount of time, if asked. I will try to find it.

Not trying to be difficult, but just trying to make things easier on you. A copy of your passport with just information page and most recent visa page will also work.

The way the people see things here change day by day Fondles.

I am really only trying to find out what is right and what is wrong mate.

Based upon what others have posted I feel we are all in doubt.

30+ years here never carried my passport. Been asked for it 3 or 4 times. So off to the house to show the copper. No problem. Note carrying a copy of your passport is useless. No good.
Always use my Thai drivers licence at hotel. Never a problem.
Only time I ever used passport at bank was to open an account.

A few years back was told by a police general no need but must produce if asked. This was precoup so things may have changed.

LT, you are correct in that things change on a daily basis here. If you feel better carrying your passport on you, that is fine. In the meantime, I wont and probably neither one of us is wrong.

If you have the 'Yellow Book' you can obtain a Pink Thai ID card which is issued to farang. You can use it instead of producing your passport. It's free and takes about 30 minutes to acquire from your local Amphur. I have one.

FWIW: despite what clueless foreigners and thais alike spout out, there is no thai law on the books that a foreigner must carry their passport. It is written as must have valid identification on their person and must produce their passport within a reasonable amount of time IF requested to do so.

That b/s old wives take about "foreigners must carry their passport always" has been repeated so much it's taken as gospel.

Although you have contributed some great stuff here to tell a policeman I don't need to carry my passport because Todddaniels told me so doesn't work every time.

99% of most visitors here don't have a Thai drivers licence so what do they need to present as Personal ID? You pull out an international licence and they just shake their heads.
