    Aussie applying for Marriage Visa

I am an Aussie, married to Thai lady for 3 years, legally, have marriage certificate.
Have decided to go for a marriage visa, but things have changed since I did this when married to my first wife in 2010. That time we walked into Consulate in Brisbane and it took 10 minutes, no problem.
Now I will be doing it by mail, probably through Consulate in Sydney.

Looked at their website and was a bit confused with the wording regarding the marriage certificate, on the website it says :

"A copy of proof of relationship between yourself and your spouse or family member i.e. birth certificate, marriage certificate, house registration"
(no mention of a JP certifying anything)

But on the Form A which has to be filled out is says :

"THAI SPOUSE / NON THAI SPOUSE / FAMILY VISIT
1 A COPY OF MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE or BIRTH CERTIFICATE certified by JP-Justice of Peace ( To prove of relationship between applicant and spouse/family member)"

What do they mean by "a copy of the marriage certificate certified by a JP ?
There is no mention of that on their webpage. Do they mean I have to get a JP in Australia to certify the marriage certificate ?
Not sure if a JP would do that as my wife will not be there, she will be in Thailand.

Hope someone on the forum has been through the same deal lately and can help me out with this as it is doing my head in.

Yes, the Brisbane office was one of the best ever, never had a problem there. Cannot believe they closed it, apparently there is a bit of a story behind it's closure.

You don't want to hand over the original ducuments for them to keep in their files, do you?
You need to get a certified copy of the docs, i.e. saying they are indeed copies of the original. Usually an official stamp with date & official's sig does it.

That's all it means, me thinks.

Thanks stroller, I understand the bit about having copies made of the original but what I was not sure about was having it certified by a JP.
Could I have it certified by someone in the Thai government, like at our local Amphur, or do I have to get it done in Australia.
Our marriage certificate is in Thai, an Aussie JP would not certify it, and even if I had it translated into English would an Aussie JP sign it ? How would they know if I was actually married to this lady ?
Hope I can have it done in Thailand, much easier.
    Thanks again.

Another way around it is to head to Savannakhet and get a multi entry non o based on marriage, its a lot less aggro, you dont have to transfer or show funds or make any trips to Chang Wattana, although you do have to leave thailand evey 90 days.

Mickmac, when a JP or other certifies a document, he's not saying it's real just that it's a true copy.

The Thai consulate will except a certified copy from Thailand, you need to phone the consulate up and see who can do it in Thailand, Amphor boss, etc.

I do the Savanakhet run, overnight stay, form fillers there, they will copy what you need, input the application details on a computer, print it out.
Hand it in, pay the money, pick up next day.

Thanks for the advice, will have to sort it out soon, have to fly back to Oz next Wednesday. Will ring the Consulate in Brisbane and see what they say and keep Laos in mind as well.

@ James, I contacted Star Visa in CM, we have dealt with them before and they were good when it came to arranging Oz visa for my wife.
They said the documents have to be sent to the Dept of Foreign Affairs to be certified otherwise the Thai Consulate in Brisbane will not accept them.
    Thanks for your advice

That would be a bit strange, why would you need the Dept. of foreign affairs to certify Thai documents for a Thai consulate.

Have done the spouse multi in Melbourne many times, never been asked for anything from the Thai department of foreign affairs.

Even when a got the kids Thai birth certificates from the embassy in Canberra, local [Australian] certification was all that was needed.

If you are in Thailand, take the original wedding certs you, should have one each and the written one, copy of everything else, wife's ID card, house book etc a letter from your wife, stating you are still together, that's it.
