It would appear Thai Immigrations has pushed back the "new penalties for overstayerz" until the 29th of August, NOT the 12 as previously announced.
Heavy new penalties await visa overstays - The Nation

I'm not sure if they're still goin' ahead with the crack down on August 12 against "border-bouncerz" or "runnerz" who live here on tourist visas or visa exempt stamps. Some border crossings are already enforcing arbitrary rules about this already.

It would also appear that some Immigrations officer who was shooting off his mouth in another Zone, got corrected about sayin' foreigners need to carry their passports all the time here. There're now reports comin' from the guy at the top 'o the pile, that it ain't like that at all.

About the only advice I can give is IF you're on overstay get it sorted out sooner rather than later. Right now, you can waltz up to the place you pay overstays at Suvarnabhumi, pay your fine, wing your way out to any country with little problem at all. No one knows if doing that after the 29th of August constitutes "turning yourself in" or if you'll skate thru. Good Luck...

Well, it would appear that the "overstay crackdown" and "new penalties for overstayers" are at this time much ado about nothing..

In the finite wisdom of the powerz that be here, they decided (possibly much to the chagrin of that loose cannon in Zone 6 who's always runnin' off at the mouth), that they weren't going to do a single thing different about overstay or the penalties UNTIL it is voted thru by the new cabinet.

Unless I'm mistaken it only convened a coupla days ago. Now this is just a guess, but I imagine they have more pressing issues in front of them than this draconian overstay rule.

People in Bangkok are signing a form that they understand there could be the outlined penalties for overstay and there's still that giant poster in from of the Immigrations entry door at Chaengwattana.

So far it's business as usual exiting at the airports on an overstay, even a lengthy one..

I'm sure once the cabinet votes thru the proposal it'll make the news..

    Stay tuned..

CSFFan; Point taken (I edited that part out of the other post. . . .)

Now I'm just graspin' at straws here, BUT:

A foreigner might know something about this because every Thailand related forum out in internet land is grandstanding the news.

Not to mention there's that GIANT 5 foot square banner you hafta walk past to get into the door at Chaengwattana.

Even the two officers I spoke to who I got the form from said they really weren't clear on what was gonna be what.. It could be smoke and mirrors or it could be real who really knows..

You are so right. As with most things in Thailand. Just talk, no action.

    TD- Information please.
If I come in on a standard 30 day visa on arrival, can I go to LAO and convert it to a 90 day, single entry visa based on being married to a Thai? If so, can you tell me what I need to do, what documentation will I need to show?

    Many thanks for any advise/comments

Todd will be along soon to point out in an obnoxious and asinine way that 30 day stamps are NOT VISAS, they are visa exempt entry.....

But, back to your question, if you go to Laos, you are not converting it, you are just getting a Non O visa based on marriage.

You need signed copies of her housebook, her ID, your marriage cert, the KR2 (excerpt of marriage record) and copies of your passport.
Savvanakhet is easiest and now same day service. There are shops outside which will fill in everything and do all the copying, pp photo etc for a few baht.

But you can also go to Cheang Wattana convert your visa exempt stay into a Non-O as long as you have at least 15 days left.
