    AFAIK: there is no private thai language school in Bangkok which makes you "show" you got an ED visa BEFORE you start studying. Sorry, ALL my experience is with schools in Bangkok.. (I don't get out much!).

    In fact with the Ministry of Education back-logged by about 4-6 weeks, just to get the "invitation letter" from them so the school can issue you the paperwork to go outside the country and secure a single entry Non-Immigrant Type-ED visa (good for 90 days), you're studying thai almost a month BEFORE you get the paperwork to go get your visa.

    While a LOT of schools "tout" the one year visa, what it really is (especially if they are private Thai language schools in Bangkok) is;
    • A pile 'o paperwork to go outta the country and secure a single entry 90 day Non-ED visa
    AND
    • A subsequent pile 'o paperwork every 90 days after that to get an extension of stay for another 90 days.
    In Bangkok there is NO testing of students studying thai on an ED visa. Unless if by testing you mean the same old, "hello, how are you?" thai b/s pleasant speak which takes place.

    IF you have your ducks in a row paperwork-wise Thai Immigrations just processes it and stamps you with another 90 day extension of stay.

    I'd be interested to know the school you attend there Fluke, because by your profile you say you're in Chiang Mai. There's only a finite number of places you could be studying thai which are registered by the MOE. Some are good, some not so..

    Good luck with that 90 day test of the thai language dealy...

    I enrolled at a Thai language School just before Songran and all the paperwork for the Visa was done within three weeks .
    I applied in Chiang Mai and everything got sent to BKK and then back to CM within three weeks , over Sonkram as well .
    The paperwork is all sorted out by the School , its quite a simple procedure : Apply at the School , pay the money , go back a few weeks later to collect the documents and then take the documents to an Embassy abroad .

    You are contradicting yourself : First you say there are no tests of a students language ability, then you say that are tests , but they are simple tests .
    A test, even if it is a basic simple test , is still a test .

    Well spotted Fluke;

    What I mean is when you renew an extension of stay every 90 days there is NO test by the immigrations officials, period. They don't care about anything but your paperwork being in order. They might talk to you in thai (seeing as you're allegedly studying it), but if you don't answer they don't give a toss.

    When your year's worth of 90 day ED visa extensions of stay are done and you want to continue studying thai for another year; you are sent to the Ministry of Education and "tested".

    However that test is so pathetic that it is just "going thru the motions" for most people. Face it; IF you went to every class for a year you would have studied thai about 200 hours (although most schools sell their "year visa dealy" on less hours than that).

    Studying for that few of hours, the MOE isn't expecting people to speak more than 2-word-tourist-thai or retard thai. I've never known a person who went to the MOE and who didn't get approved to study for another year.

    Then again, if you spoke great thai the MOE might ask; WTF are you doing studying thai?

    Sorry for the confusion..
