there's an interactive style application form that asks you 1 question at a time and stops you adding stuff that u don't need. getting the passport was surprisingly easy. if not hideously expensive.

Why the fuck are the Brit taxpayers on the the hook for a huge compound in prime Bangkok real estate if the embassy is incapable of even providing the most basic of services to the citizens of the country it supposedly represents?

They have out sourced passport renewals to HK, charge ridiculous fees for simple documents and do nothing to support Brits who find themselves in trouble beyond giving an email address of the FCO and the drunken sod who is the Honorary Consul in Phuket.

No Brit ambassador has stood up and made a fuss about anything that happens to Brit nationals here for decades.

Why do we need a Brit embassy at all? It is useless and a total waste of money.

They advertised last year for "consular staff".

Turns out they wanted extra sales people for the UK defence industry when ASEAN goes live.

Fully agree with your post with the caveat that my Hon Consul is a teetotaler and a decent bloke to boot.

All British passports are now issued in the U.K regardless of where you are living in the world, the cost of renewing is exactly the same, regardless of where you live. Renewing from Paris or anywhere in France is exactly the same price as somebody in Thailand.
The cheapest and quickest way is to go to the passport office in the U.K and apply for an emergency passport, fast track service.

When you apply for a new passport, your present passport will be canceled when the application documents are received in Hong Kong.

So it doesn't really matter how much usage your present PP has.
How can they cancel your passport if you only send a copy as stipulated and still have your passport. If you renew in UK they cut the corner off so you cant use it but you dont send it to hong kong.... pete

^obviously, you can expect unimaginable grief at any time during this process - welcome to ---ocracy.

The British Embassy are fukers... The last 2 times I paid for a new passport (once in Victoria at the head office, once in Bangkok) I paid extra to get the jumbo passport. Both times, even though they took the money, normal passport came back, no refund no argument, just a fuk you...

I need a passport too, from Oman. It's the same process, send it to the UK (not HK from here...), get it back in 4 weeks, about 175 pounds. Except, no addresses as such in the desert, so I'll have to rent a post office box too; which may or may not be acceptable to them - the Muscat embassy consists of a recorded message which never gets back to you...

I hope the UK embassy staff in the UK and Muscat, inbetween their nice cocktail parties and travelling to and from their luxury apartments, aren't too stressed by doing nothing all day every day... Rant nearly over..., they fuk you with taxes and NI contributions, I got fuked by Thatcher and her bloody serps opt out and Equitable Life fuking up (bankers don't suffer though; nice bonuses), I'll get fuked by inheritance tax, and I get fuked by zero service, I'm just a firkin body to be raped to the max by the current system. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

No good. They use DHL, which wont deliver to P.O. Boxes.

So apart from being the taxpayer funded Sales and Marketing arm of the defence industry what do they do?

Passport? Send everything to HK who then send it to the UK.

Get into trouble? Here's the email for the FCO in London.

UK diplomatic missions are just taking the piss now

It's not the cheapest or quickest way if you live in Thailand and don't feel like spending days of travel and a lot of money for something that was traditionally accomplished at an embassy.

Those fuckers are possibly more useless than the ones in BKK. I met my (now) Thai wife in Oman and trying to get the docs to marry out of that place was a joke. They had no idea what I wanted, no idea of the requirements and no idea of Omani law.

Fucking idiots, but walk in and say "I want to start drilling for gas in the gulf" and see the doors swing open.

Some office in London managed to get me a full UK passport in under 24 Hrs.

It was a requirement for the Falklands at the time apparently.

They cancel it by notifying the immigration at the airports. When you receive the new passport you have to cut the corner off the cover on your old one yourself.

Has anyone used the 'new' Bangkok service recently? I need to know how long it takes. I thought I read 3-4 weeks. Can anyone confirm?

I received a new passport yesterday morning.

It was one of the very last ones sent out from Hong Kong which closed it's doors last Friday.

It took 3 weeks to the day.

555 that's what I heard elsewhere. The UK must be longer?? Actually, longer distance but better facilities? Possibly.

But as we will be out of the UK reference 6 months on your passport rule i renewed mine last month .Used Post Office Passport Check & Send fee £81.25.
Sent the old passport off on a Friday,5 days later received a text message from H.M.P.O,i thought what do the prison service want with me.Read message,ah passport office we have received your passport application.
Next day a Thursday my nice new passport arrived so took 6 days to process in the UK.

Just got mine back now, less than 2 weeks since sent it off, plus they give you the unused remaining time as in mine didn't expire till June 2014, new one valid till June 2024.

ROFL, they only give you the unused time for up to 9 months I believe.

My boss got his back this week.... just over 4 weeks in total, sent it in the gap between Xmas and New Year so it may have been a bit quicker without the break

I did it a few months ago and got my new passport back within three weeks.

If you would have to travel a considerable distance to your nearest embassy it's actually much more convenient this way.
